SDN,

I have recently asked two professors to write me LOR for med schools. I read on the AAMC site that there are specific guidelines:

Letter authors must include your AAMC ID and AMCAS Letter ID found on your Letter Request Form when sending letters, regardless of how they are submitting the letter.

Medical schools may require your letters to be on official letterhead and include the author's signature

I do not understand what my AAMC ID is. I am going to be usually Interfolio, so what ID do I need to give them? I am thoroughly confused.

The number on your application is your ID.

On which application? The one ill be sending into the schools? I don't have that number yet, so how would I tell them what to write if they are writing them now?

My thoughts exactly.

Just wait until you can start an AMCAS

The application you mean? What about DO apps? Is that a different number?

Yes they are different application services. For DO I just typed in my number for each school I sent it to and that worked fine. Idk if it will work for AMCAS though since you aren't sending it to schools directly from Interfolio

does your school write committee letters? If so, I don't think you have to worry about any of these rules.

After the new cycle opens up, you start your AMCAS and AACOMAS apps. They will each have a number for you. The AACOMAS ID number will be something like 123456-2014. You can tell Interfolio to put your AACOMAS ID on all of your letters automatically. Go to the help section of interfolio for instructions (I can't remember exactly how)

Wait. So if I asked a professor way back, would I need him to go back into Interfolio and put my AMCAS id now?

No, Interfolio will do it for you. You don't need a new letter.

I had this exact question today stressin' me out, because I plan to use interfolio and I read on amcas that they need the ID's on the letter... searched a little and found this gem with basically everything you need to know about LOR's:

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=896994

scroll down to #8.... "You can have them write the letter, upload it to a letter service (interfolio) , and then many months later have the letter sent to AMCAS once the application opens. When you do this, you have the ability to add on both your AMCAS ID and the Letter ID to the letter. All your letter writer needs to do is upload the letter (or mail it in) on letterhead and with a signature."

sounds extremely easy and convenient... you can use interfolio for letters after this semester to save for the 2014 application. I don't know how the ID's get put on the letter though, but seems legit... 👍
