Got smacked in the face today with a flood of rejections from:
Maine and Univ. of Maryland

Don't feel bad ryanpj, I received my second rejection from Maine today along w/ Univ. of Maryland.

hey, i just got a rejection letter from new mexico.....about a month after *i* declined their invitation to interview!

Put me on the list for Maine rejects.

hey guys, I'm into my second year of residency and still waiting to hear a rejection from a few programs. I have my fingers crossed though that they still might give me an interview.😉
So enjoy the interviews you have and don't sweat the rejections. In my mind there is no rhyme nor reason for how applicants are picked.

It's a long drive to Louisville, anyway.

Anyone know what the story is with UNC?
Thanks,
L

I'm a UNC EM resident.
Our residency coordinator had a family emergency and needed to take several months of leave in early November. The PD, assistant PDs, chief residents, and office staff, are pitching in to take over her responsibilities, such as scheduling interviews and processing ERAS information. Please be patient if you have not heard from UNC. This was a surprising turn to events for everyone and we're doing the best we can.

This year we received 800+ applications, of which we'll interview about 100, and match 8. We have had three interview dates so far with outstanding applicants. We'll be interviews Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout December and January except for time off around the holidays.

UNC is an excellent program and our residents are very happy here. The training experience we receive between splitting our time between UNC (a major quarternary medical center with >50% admission rate and >10% ICU admit rate) and WakeMed (a ~150,000 visit, very efficient community hospital with one of the busiest Peds EDs in the Southeast) in superb. Our residency leadership is incredible, with PD Rob Vissers, Chair Judy Tintinalli, and incredible Assitant PDs. Our faculty are accomplished and enthusiastic teachers. Our Chapel Hill location is fantastic. Our resients are a close-knit group of laid-back, friendy people with diverse interests. Our program is vey committed to each resident developing their niche within EM, and our residents have been extremely involved in national leadership and research.

I hope potential interviewees will look paste the recent administrative problem with the interview scheduling and consider our program on its merits.

emdoc21,

Thank you for an excellent and informative post. Obviously you guys are going through a tough time with your coordinators' absence. No worries about the delay...it's just that UNC is one of my top choices and I'd love the chance to interview there. Thanks again for all of the info!

Just passing on a word of advice I got last year that was valuable. If you are really interested in a program and received a rejection letter it doesn't hurt to write back stating something like:

" thanks for your consideration, I am still very interested in your program, if the situation changes for you later in the season I would still very much like to interview at your program".

Got about 4 places that changes their minds about me. When I asked what the deal was during my interview they stated they had thought I wasn't serious about interviewing due to geography (I'm from the Midwest) and my e-mail showed them some extra interest.

The SAEM data on ED census is outdated for many programs, including UNC. Many ED programs have seen a dramatic increase in census over the past few years.

cook county's email was pretty sneaky. the heading read, "residency interview"

I'm disappointed, I was looking forward to the evil rejection email from Christ.

I noticed that number of the early posters to this thread were rejected from Akron and Neoucom programs for Em.

May I ask what the circumstances of those rejections were? Did you feel it was a bad interview, your Step 1 (or 2) scores were too low, poor grades, etc. etc. I am from Cleveland and am going to CWRU next year, and hope VERY much to do EM in or near Cleveland (or Akron), and therefore I am startled by the rejection evident here from those programs. What gives? I though that first of all, EM is not that competitive and secondly that those programs ought not be that competitive no matter what the discipline.

Am I wrong about that. Are the programs in Akron super strong or competitive?

Rejections typically come before, not after interviews.

Most programs receive anywhere from 500-1500 applications and interview from 50-100 people.

It's just not possible to interview everyone. So they screen the applicants. Part of their screening method is to see if you would fit in with a particular program. If you said you enjoy hiking, camping, and the outdoors, then a program in Boston might reject you because that's just not something that's readily available in Boston. (I know, it's only a drive away, but work with me here...)

First, EM is somewhat competitive and seems to be becoming more so each year. Second, I interviewed at Akron General and regard the program very highly. It seemed to me that they were a bit "picky" regarding interveiws, I was repeatedly asked "Why Akron?" It seems they did some research a few years back (after a poor match - 1 spot unfilled) and discovered that the reason many applicants did not rank them highly was simple geography. I was given the impression that they were actively screening applications for an "Ohio connection". For what it is worth, last year they did not go very deep in their rank order list.

I do not know about Akron City/SUMMA, I'm still waiting to hear from them 🙄!!!
