WVSOM is often ranked near the top in rural medicine and prides itself on teaching physicians to practice in rural and underserved areas.

Yeah, I think WVSOM ranked number 1 for the number of students entering primary care and 7 for Rural Medicine. Some decide to specialize, but there aren't to many.

Bad new is WVSOM is pretty expensive.

I am not in the rural program at TCOM, but from what I hear, it is pretty unique. They have an ongoing rural track program now with about 20 students in it, but apparently they are taking 10-12 students into a special 4 year program with this next class. I think it includes additional course work and increased rotations, etc, all focused on rural medicine. I think there is research and public health involved in this. It sounds pretty cool. I believe that a Dr. Bowling here at TCOM is in charge of it, you might try sending him an email. He's a good guy.

thanks for the info. I have not met a lot people who are interested in rural medicine. I'm going to look into those programs and see what comes out of it. I applied this year to TCOM's program however I hear it's pretty tough to get in and plus I hear Dr. Bowling likes applicants to have taken extensive bio and chem upper divisions. Not sure how much of that is true.

I wonder how many others have applied this year to the rural med. pgrm.?
