Yes, and yes for orthos too. "Small town" rural dentistry and the specialist situation is an interesting relationship. Depending on how rural the area is, some specialist may regularly have a referral base of dentists from upwards of 100 miles away.

The thing is though that in rural areas like that, patients are typically used to having to travel great distances to get to other things such as shopping malls, other doctors, airports, etc so they tend not to be phased by having to travel to the OMFS and/or orthodontist.

In my practice (town of roughly 10,000), the closest pedodontist is 30 miles in any direction. So when little johnny or little sally is a"devil child" in the chair and I refer out, Mom and Dad are used to traveling for things like this.

My best friend from d-school is an OMFS in Maine. And geographically the group he's part of has offices that are almost 200 miles apart from the Western most office to the Eastern most office. Basically, if your a specialist in a rural setting, either yuor patients, or yourself if you have multiple offices, will end up putting alot of miles on the car;)
