RUSH Class of 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys, I got my letter to submit the $100 tuition dposit, but it didn't mention if it was refundable before may 15. Is it safe to assume that it is? Just asking in case something unforseen happens between now and May 15 🙂

Yes, it's refundable. I did that w/ other schools and got a check back from them.

I called them about this to confirm and yes, it is refundable.

According to their estimated budget for 2007-2008, for 1st year the total cost of attendance if you are living on campus is $59,720 or $61,920 if you are living off campus.

No joke, an M1 (a fellow classmate) found this little gem. You'll be happy to know that Rush is ranked in something.

Whoops, looks like you need to be registered to see that now. Well when we first got that link it ranked the top 50 most expensive medical schools and we were 5 or 6 on there.

Hey all, I know this is probably very late hopes and what not, but does anyone have an idea when the application season ends over at Rush? I only ask because I have not received a rejection, but I have not received an interview either...I'm not keeping my hopes too high, but is there a slight chance??

congrats to you all that have gotten in!

Hi,

I'm sorry but I don't know how late the application season ends. But there's always a chance of getting accepted even this late, or at the very least being placed on a waiting list. I've heard (not necessarily from Rush) about people who were on the waiting list at a school and they find out a spot opened up like a week or two before school starts. Anyway, I hope everything works out for you.

Rush sent out an update email on April 4th to all accepted students and it included this:

"We have hosted the final group of applicants for interviews and are turning our attention back to each of you-our matriculants for the entering class of 2008!"

Unfortunately I think interviews concluded the 2nd week of March. Best wishes on where you choose to go!! 🙂

but I have not received an interview either...

I'm sorry I was sleepy when I first read that but I didn't notice you hadn't received an interview letter yet. The interviews are over so my guess is they're slow to send out the rest of the letters. Best of luck everywhere else though!

Thanks for everyone's help! I appreciate the responses...Good luck to you all at Rush!

Hey guys,
Anyone hear anything about their financial aid yet ?

🙂

Hey guys! Just discovered this thread. I'm goin to Rush next year as well. I just got my financial aid award, about 20% is covered by a grant and the rest is loans. Unfortunately the biggest loan by far is the unsubsidized one.

I know people mentioned Wicker Park and Pilsen, any advice on the other cool neighborhoods in chicago? I'm about to go apt hunting soon.

Also, thanks Fresh for all the info its been really helpful. Question for you--do they have Jummah on campus anywhere?

How are your imam and khutbah skills? There is the general jummah that takes place from 1-2pm, usually though in an effort to minimize how much class we miss (usually that Friday evening there are labs or workshops which you shouldn't really skip) the students from RMC and the other colleges at Rush get together and make a small, short jammath. SO I am serious, brush up on your skills because we try and get everyone to rotate and lead one Friday prayer (although it doesn't always work out that way, which isn't fair to the brother who has to lead most of the time).

Cool as in any cool neighborhood, or cool and AFFORDABLE?

er.. just checked your profile, nevermind about the question I asked 😀

Point is it happens. Actually you may be able to help us as the sisters don't always join in on this little jammath (including sisters from other colleges), perhaps you can change that eh? That's the spirit.

haha yeah i was going to say i don't really have imam and khutbah skills 🙂 but thanks for the info!

i guess it would be better to know what the cool and affordable neighborhoods are? Where do most of the students who don't live at center court live? Pilsen? Is there a good amount of students in south loop? what about nearby suburbs of chicago.

I personally know of a couple students who commute from nearby suburbs of Chicago (west of Chicago, off 290), one commutes via CTA (green line to pink) and the other commutes with her car.

I know of 1 person who lives in the South Loop (or Near South Side) and she has a beautiful view of Michigan Ave, it's not cheap though! She's at 1255 S Michigan Ave. Then there's 1 person I know who lives in University Village (South Campus of UIC). Another person who lives in Lincoln Park. I live near Albany Park (but at home home).

The point is there are a lot of options and Pilsen is easier on the bank account but depending on your situation if you can afford to live in a different locale then you have a lot of options. There is no 1 neighborhood that non-Center Court student are concentrated in. I think that may have been partially the point in their decision to live somewhere other than Center Court: to get away from medical school life

Hey this is my time posting in this forum. More than likely I will be going to Rush next year. I was wondering if any M1 student had any info on what second look day was like last year. Not sure what to expect or if its worth skipping out on work to go.

I commented on second look day, it's post #88

If you have questions beyond that post 'em here. I recommend doing a quick read through the forum because there were many questions asked (and answered).

By the way, when is second look day anyway?

Hey just found this blog ( if thats what its called) , looking forward to meeting all my future classmates! Im going to second look day and I was wondering if there was anyone going from a school in Michigan that would want to carpool ( im from michigan too.. obvously ha) ?

I'm going to go, but I don't think I'm going to go the whole day because I'll be apartment hunting and trying to figure out moving logistics. Do you know anyone who would let me take a look at their apartment in case I don't stay the whole day? Still not sure if living at school will be the best option. Oh, but you guys will be in class the whole time? Should I arrange something with the school?

We're in class that day till 4pm. I can ask around.. were you looking to check the Center Court apartments? Because that I think they do show on Second Look Day. Or were you interested in apartments near Rush but not Center Court? For those I know of two or three people who live in "MD Apartments" and I can find out if they'd be willing to show someone around. We've got mid-terms next week so they probably couldn't spare that much time.

Center Court..I just sent an e-mail to Rush to check if they show them. Do people like those MD Apartments? (I'd prefer to see Center Court over those.) Today I spent 10 min or less looking at each apartment so I wouldn't take much of their time.

Also, when are Fall midterms? (There's a wedding I may have to miss.) Thanks!

I'm pretty sure Center Court is part of the tour. If not then ask an M1 or M2 if they can show you around after 2nd look day, I don't think it would be a problem. In the mean time I'll ask some friends and see if they'd be willing. (I don't live in Center Court).

People like the MD apartments, but they're pretty expensive. Nice thing is it has its own gym on the ground floor.

If you do a google search for Rush Academic Calendar you get this page which has PDF versions of simple calendars for the next few years. Unfortunately they don't show when the mid-terms are but my guess is either the week of Oct 13-17 or Oct 20-24. I think they final decision isn't made until a few weeks before the quarter begins.

MD apartments are overpriced, have cockroaches (some of them), and do billing terribly.

If you live there, the utilities are added up, and divided amongst all tenants.
What does this mean? If you don't use your heat for an entire month, you'll still get a $100 heating bill.

I personally do not live at MD, but know people that do and it's a rip off.
I live at Center Court Gardens, and have no complaints (although some people might not like the L-train, which isn't loud, but might bug other people).

If coming here, and you want to live locally, I would HIGHLY suggest:
1) Center Court (if you can get one; they go fast!)
2) Walking around the area (Loomis, Polk, Taylor) and look in the windows of places that rent; You won't find these places online
3) MD if you want to stay local (but again, I think it's a bad idea)

PM me if you want any other info.

Hey,

I am an M1 at Rush and I live in the wickerpark/bucktown area (there are about 10-15 M1s living in the area). It is a great place to live...great night life, very safe and only a 10-15min drive from campus (or 15-20 min bus ride) if you are do not have a car, I would suggest living within walking distance of Ashland (the bus goes straight to Rush and is dependable in the morning...I would not try to use the L trains...I have heard that they take longer and aren't always on time) (also, alot of people bike from the area).

(Wicker Park is basically Division to North and Western to Ashland give or take a few blocks...and you can find some great deals if you look around....I live off of North...but the area around Division is really becoming much better) I would try to find a roomate though...cuts down on costs!

goodluck and see you next year!

I just heard from Center Court a couple days ago, they offered me a room and said that I need to let them know by the end of the month.

On a side note, Fresh thats so random I didn't know you knew Hassan! I've met your little bro Saim a bunch of times! Small world 🙂

Yeah that was strange, Hassan asked where I was going so I filled him in and he told me "i have a cousin going there next year." Saim's technically my cousin, Saim has an older brother that goes to Loyola.

I wish I could say that might be me, as I was trying really hard to get a position as a tour guide person .. but I think only the student council reps are the ones that get to do that.

NOT TRUE! I'm almost done with my M3 year and have never been a student council rep, but I was an academic tour guide during my M1/M2 years and was a clinical tour guide during my M3 year. Just had to set the record straight!

And congrats to all of you rising M1s--I've had a great ride and am finding it hard to believe that I'll be graduating in a year!

On Center Court:

As I've said, I currently live in Wicker Park, and I moved into my apartment a few weeks before school started. Before I found my place, I applied for housing at Center Court, but was put on a waiting list. The first week someone came up to me and asked if I was still interested in a spot at Center Court. I told her no thanks, I just signed a lease.

Point of the story is, if you don't get right into CCG, you might get in in a small bit. Commuting from the suburbs (assuming you're from the suburbs) or staying with a friend wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if you really have your heart set on CCG.

I'm set on living off campus now and gave my Center Court apt up today so hopefully someone more deserving will get it!

Now for today's questions, does Rush give its students a UPass? If not, who can I get in touch with to ask about setting it up? When thinking about getting to school, which is more reliable, the El or buses (ie Ashland bus)? Is Pink or Blue better or are they the same? Is July too late to start looking for an apt?

There's no UPass, I'm afraid. As regards the el, the blue line previously had 'b' trains which made intermittent runs to 54/Cermak during rush hour, though this seemingly is no longer the case. So, you can either take the Pink line and exit at Polk or take the Blue line and exit at IMD (requires going up a long ramp). Keep in mind the blue line is 24hr service and runs on older, noisier stock. The Ashland bus (#9?) is alright, though it might show up in erratic intervals during times of congested traffic.

Now for today's questions, does Rush give its students a UPass? If not, who can I get in touch with to ask about setting it up?

Yep, futronius is right in what they said. As for who you can get in touch with to ask about setting it up, I in fact have considered going to the administration about this too but before I did I learned why it isn't setup to begin with. As you may know if a school decides to use the U-Pass, then every [full-time] student enrolled in the university must buy it, it becomes a part of their tuition in a way. Well there are many students at Rush who don't actually have to come to Rush, because of the nature of their programs they actually take classes online (at least in their latter years), and apparently this is a significant portion of the class?

But let me e-mail the person I was going to talk to about it anyway so I can get a more official answer and I'll get back to you about this.

As for whether July is too late, I honestly don't know. I wouldn't think so though, I imagine August to be a busier month for new renters as few people move in 2 months before school starts. (I'm comparing to UIC's undergrad population, which is the largest you would be 'competing' with).

I second Vanilla! (Since we live half a block away from eachother) Carpooling rocks!!

BTW I love how there are more M1s on here than new M0s .....yay for procrastinating on studying.

Congrats to everyone and can't wait to meet you next year!
also Fresh is the bomb-diggity resource so keep firing away questions at him.....

Hi everyone,

I just recently discovered this thread. Anyways, I was just wondering if any of you have heard anything back from Rush regarding sending in transcripts, orientation, etc. I did hear back from them about financial aid, but that's it. The other med schools I got accepted to sent welcome packets...does Rush not do that?

You should get a welcome package.. why not send an e-mail to Rush at the admissions e-mail address?

Hey everyone, I'm going to be an M1 at UIC School of Medicine in the fall. I'm looking for a roommate(s) to find an apartment with in the Wicker Park area, which is a fairly easy commute to both UIC and Rush. If anyone is even somewhat interested, feel free to email me back on here and we can chat and see if we are compatible / looking for the same type of thing.

I'm pretty sure that the admissions people said on interview day that all the papers they gave us then constituted the "Welcome Packet." My memory from November may be failing me though...

Hey everyone. So I finally discovered this thread also. I am going to attend Rush in September and am very excited about it.
Anywho, in regards to the "welcome packet", during our second look day, they gave us a lot of forms and stuff that needed to be sent (final transcripts, immunization forms, etc.). However, if memory serves me right, they said they were going to send this by mail soon so that everyone had the same things and also just in the case that one would lose those papers that day. I haven't received anything yet.

Fresh is probably not going to be happy that I'm replying before he does. Oh well..

There is public wireless access available for everyone, just about everywhere on Rush buildings. I'm sure there are few not-so-great spots but overall its pretty good.

I am currently at CCG (trying to say as hip as Fresh) or Center Court Gardens, using ATT for internet. They just raised their internet price w/o telephone service to $30 per month. I still think it is cheaper than Comcast and I HATE dealing with them. The speed is only 1.5Mbps (comcas ~6Mbps) but I don't that makes too much of a difference in everyday use.

J

Is there any wireless internet available in the classroom areas? I anticipate bringing my computer with me every day.

Also, do any current Rush students use ATT for their internet service in Center Court? It seems like a better deal than Comcast.

You are correct .. not happy.

For those of you who will be coming in w/ iPod touch or iPhones, you can't use the free wi-fi to push e-mail for the same reason you can't use the wifi network to download torrents while in class, most if not virtually all the ports are blocked. Just an fyi. You can still browse to Gmail on your iPod Touch or iPhone on the wifi network and send e-mails that way.

If you didn't understand any of that, then you probably don't need push e-mail abilities, and you can just ignore all that.

Here we see the iPhone 2.0 software featuring Epocrates Rx. So if all you're looking for is the basic free software you know it'll run on the iPhone/iPod Touch (at least with the 2.0 software update).

All their pay-to-use software (Pro, Essentials, Deluxe) will only work on Palm and Windows Mobile and I'm not sure if they have any plans for an iPhone release. FYI the Essentials is available free to medical students through the school.
