Hi I just got this email from Rush University:

This note acknowledges receipt of your application for the dual appointment in the PGY-1 Surgical Training Program and the PGY -2 through PGY- 4 years in Ophthalmology.

Does Rush always have an automatic surgical prelim or did I apply by mistake??

I received the same e-mail. On their website they make it sound like the first year is combined with the other three years. I didn't read anything about having the option of doing a PGY-1 year anywhere else. I'm curious if anyone knows more about this..can you do a PGY-1 year anywhere other than RUSH?

They are one of the few integrated programs that require you to do your pgy-1 year with them. That could be seen as a benefit or a drawback depending on your perspective I guess. I think it is technically a surgical prelim year, but they have apparently made it much less rigorous in the recent years. They were trying to sell it as almost a surgical "transitional year," but I think that is overstating it for sure.
