I'm psyched! I was worried that I wouldn't receive any merit-based award, but I guess I was wrong. They offered me $10k per year, which cuts the out-of-state dorming tuition down to $20k per year, which is still a bit pricey. However, there's a good chance that I'll be getting a large sum of money from my FAFSA that should further cut down on my tuition. There's also still the possibility of getting one of these private scholarships that I've been applying too.

Anyway, just wanted to share my joy with SDN. =)

Congratulations! That's quite an achievement 🙂

nice job bro how'd you do in highschool

Congratulations!

Scholarships are the best thing ever.

Haha, you should have seen me when I got home and read the letter. No one else was home at the time, so I blasted Frog's Theme from Chrono Trigger (anyone else know what this is?) and then played along to it on my guitar. 😛 Needless to say, I was hyped! =D

Congratulations. I would suggest that you not take the bait, but it's ultimately your decision. On the other hand, if you're doing a concentrated program like Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy then it's definitely a good buy to study here.

P.S. You might be getting in more money if you already did not factor in the Scarlet Scholarship / Schoonover Scholarship. Did you also receive the NSF Biotech Scholarship (only if you're SEBS I believe)?

I also assume you're on Rutgers New Brunswick. Yet again, congratulations! Your stats look great.

Congrats. I love it here at Rutgers. If I had to, I'd do it all over again. So many opportunities available.

Congratulations. Now here's a caution. Make sure that state grants from NY are transferable out of state. I know, in the case of New Jersey, they are not (at least to PA). Contact Rutgers and ask them if grants from NY are indeed transferable.

Congrats! I wish I had thought to apply for scholarships 😉

Haha, why, are you unhappy with RU? I haven't been able to find one thing that I dislike about the school just yet, except for the price, which isn't as bad as it once was with this scholarship.

I've actually never heard of the "Scarlet Scholarship/Schoonover Scholarship," nor the NSF Biotech Scholarship. Could you elaborate on these more? BTW, I am enrolling in SEBS at New Brunswick. Thanks! 🙂

Great to hear! Care to offer any words of wisdom, or mention anything that you've found makes RU awesome? 😛

Hmm, when you say NY grants, what do you mean exactly? I already know that TAP, a NY state specific grant is only applicable to in-state schools. Is this what you meant, or am I missing something?

Congrats! I wish I had thought to apply for scholarships 😉

Thanks! I actually didn't have to apply for this one though. Anyone who submitted their application prior to a certain deadline is considered for every scholarship apparently.

I'm not familiar with the financial aid in NY, sorry. However, what I am referring to is governmental aid from your state. For Pennsylvania, its the PHEAA grant that you can qualify for. For you, I'm assuming TAP is the governmental grant that the NY State Dept. of Education gives out to those that qualify. That said, just make sure when calculating your costs you only figure in transferrable aid.

Yeah, it sounds like we're on the same page. In that case, I haven't even been estimating my tuition with any such state-aid, so no worries! Thanks for the heads-up though! =)

Sorry. Just going through a rough phase. There are many ways to "scam" the system and many people use the alternative methods to the point that you get disillusioned and slightly jaded in the process. So much so that you eventually want to mimic their actions.

I tried to work in the lab with one of my professors but he ended up referring me to another professor. I looked up his research and then tried to get involved with him, but he had too many assistants. So I'm back to square one.

In addition there are some *******s and absolutely ******ed people here who will do stupid things like smoke weed at 3am and ring apartment doorbells 110~150 for giggles. Which doesn't help when you have a 8:15 AM exam and you went to bed at 11 PM and now you can't go to sleep with 4 hours of sleep and your REM sleep cycle disrupted.

It also doesn't help that most of Rutgers is run by students. Rutgers established a really poor alumnus network so they set up a telefund system run by teenagers in order to call old alumnus and get them to donate back to the University. This was an initiative set up by McCormick who is by far one of the most corrupt Presidents in the history of Universities.

He was fired from the University of Washington for having an affair with his secretary and Rutgers said, "Hey, come over here." Since then, Rutgers has been a hotbed of news and scandal in upper management.

Having a job within Rutgers and being a part of the bureaucracy, I can say that it's easy to get lost and you'll have to claw 24/7 in order to get your name across anywhere. Some of the students are highly competitive and our Organic Chemistry is very interesting, but unnecessarily in-depth and is more detailed than the MCAT.

If you're living on Cook/Douglass perhaps we could meet up and drink.

Regardless, I have to go back to my Friedel Craft's Reaction.

Yikes, sorry to hear about all of that. I'm sure some of it (namely the druggies ringing doorbells) happens at most universities though.

I'll be dorming on Cook too, so maybe we could haha. What year are you in at the moment?

EDIT:

P.S. - Could you still elaborate more on the "Scarlet Scholarship/Schoonover Scholarship" and NSF Biotech Scholarship?

Nice job, but thats still a lot of money for a state school. IMO your better off at SUNY Binghamton, where even if you DONT get a merit scholarship, its cheaper than Rutgers. Also Binghamton is a great school for sciences.
