Hey everyone, I was hoping some RVU students or others could help me with this question. I was talking to a friend who is a 4th year MD student. I told him I was accepted to RVU and he told me that it wouldn't be wise to go there because from what he heard it's possible that RVU students wouldn't be allowed to match into MD residencies due to the fact that they're for-profit. I'm hoping that this was just a rumor that he heard and that he's completely off the mark about this, but I was hopnig some people could shed some light on this, as it would definitely ease some of my worries about this school.

Thanks!

I guess there are alot of opinions floating around out there, too bad there not backed up with facts! So here are some facts so far:

1) I'm a student here and live with two third years. Both have had terrific letters of reccomendation and been invited to apply for residency programs where they rotated, one in surgery, and one in IM. I've heard that story repeated by other third years.
2) This last week RVU had their first hospital day, and it was well attended by residency directors and all of us students. The directors I talked to (and yea, there were DO and MD programs from around the US including Mi, WV, CO, NY, etc.) were all excited about being here and recruiting current RVUCOM students into their residency programs
3) We have NOT graduated our first class yet, so I have no idea how you can say anything about outcomes until that happens. Wow, whatever happend to evidence based medicine? Facts are facts and speculation is just speculation. Speculation isn't really worth much, is it.

I want to defend RVU here. I don't think directors are going to go and play politics with who they select in this matter. I really don't think they consider "legitimizing" a for-profit status by accepting students. Its just not meshing with my world-view on how they'd think and what they'd value. RVU would be as a disadvantage for being a new school, not for its profit stance.

And for that matter, I dont really think that for-profit schools will flourish just on the basis that many of the reasons why you would want to be for-profit wont be 'allowed' by COCA. Their hands are tied a lot more than you'd imagine. They can hike the tuition up as they see fit. And they can save more money and CEO payments than the non-profits can. But the fact of the matter is that COCA isn't giving them free reign either. So I dont see the for-profit model being overwhelmingly profitable (and it is overwhelmingly taxable... which I know little about but I imagine isn't something potential presidents and founders are *enthused* about).

I know its beating a dead horse to discuss it, but thats all we do here. There is a unique posts on here about once every 3-4 weeks. Everything else is rehashing old material. Just wanted to note that the for-profit status isn't really seen as such a terrible thing to those who are recruiting these students and training them. Its more of a "risky proposition" in theory, rather than practice. A school run wild will have its accreditation lost just because COCA can be subjective and stop something because "its bad" subjectively. RVU wont fall under that (I assume. there is no reason to assume otherwise).

I dont know anything about RVU. I dont even think it was around when i applied to school. Anyway i did do my third year at one of the bigger DO hospitals and have rotated through some of the other DO hospitals in the area. I have heard a couple of program directors bash RVU in passing. Although my feeling is anyone applying to primary care coming from any school has a very good shot at matching. Although those people trying to get super competetive residency spots are gonna have a harder time. More than likely the thing that would hurt is that the school is new and nobody knows what to expect from the students. Also, im sure alot program directors have never heard of Rocky Vista(especially in the MD world). It sounds like the name of a high school from an some 80's movie. However, I think if you rotate at a program and people like you that will overcome the "for profit" bias in the DO world anyway. My feeling is the most important criteria for DO program directors is that you're not a douche.

I guess we'll see when their first class matches.

Take whatever a program says to you with a grain of salt. It's one thing for them to invite you to apply or send reps to a hospital day, it's another for them to actually rank you highly when all is said and done.

And not which programs are involved here it's hard to say. Hopefully for the students' sake it won't be an issue. I can certainly see programs possibly having a bias against the school or just not even know it exists, but I'd probably imagine that they'd be a little less DO friendly in general.

So I'm wondering about the UC residencies in CO, I would assume RVU students can apply to match for them, or are they only offered to UC students?

MD residencies take Caribbean grads, Caribbean schools are for profit. There is no reason to think MD residencies as a whole are going to band together and put a "lockout" on RVU grads.

Interestingly enough, I heard RVU is eventually going to try to get their new DO residencies (that they are supposedly starting) dually accredited with the ACGME. I read it in a Colorado newspaper online, but I am too lazy to look for it. The link is in one of the other RVU threads.

I thought I saw that article as well on RVUs 'News' page...
