I have been fortunate enough to have this problem but feeling confused.
I really liked both schools, and have met both attendings and residents that have attended both schools with lots of positive feedback about both, with the main takeaway being that school is a lot of self-studying, how proactive you are on networking and excelling at your boards is largely up to you, and that in the end it's all basically the same (for the schools I'm between at least).
Cost wise, New York is def more expensive though loan allotment is less. Both schools have excellent matches and matched people into my specialties of choice, likely aiming for something competitive with peace of mind if I am not able to attain those goals and need to swerve. I've been working in healthcare for 10+ years and have a general idea of what I want but am keeping an open mind. My heart loves all things airway, so oto or anesthesia, but could swerve to FP or psych or anything. My experience is mostly OR related so I have much to learn and see.
Parker is close to Denver, which is a quick flight for my fiance when he needs to travel to HQ for work. RVU is closer to my parents. Expensive as well, but slightly less than Long Island.
RVU is for profit which I didn't realize how stigmatized that wise until after my A. They also are affiliated with a Caribbean school which gives me the ick but after touring the campus I was really excited to live in CO and the school seemed great on paper. The students on campus seemed happy. The resident I know who matched competitively said the school prepared her well.
We're leaning CO. My fiance is stoked to have a shorter flight than what he's been doing since we currently live on the east coast. I am from the west coast but fell in love with the north east and am just really sad to leave this area. NYIT seems like the better school, but when I compare match and board pass rates, both schools seem very comparable.
Does the for-profit status of the school really set me at a disadvantage? Is NYIT so much of a better school that I should bring it up to my partner that it's worth considering? We are set to move in 16 days. I'm so confused and am just scared about making the wrong decision and setting myself at a disadvantage when it comes to residency.
My partner has already moved from the west coast for me in the east (I moved here for school then work because I loved it here). He loves it out here too but traveling every six weeks or so on a 5+ hour flight and changing time zones get exhausting. He doesn't complain but I know it's a lot. I want to be kind and considerate to him, but a disadvantage for residency will be our problem in the long-run.
What do ya'll think? I am letting the toxicity of reddit get to me or is this a valid concern?
