I have A's at both schools and want to decide soon so I can start the housing process and what not. I live in NJ but I will be moving out and closer to school regardless of where I end up. I have always wanted to do a surgical specialty though I know anything can happen during my future rotations.
RWJMS Pro:
- Lots of research
- Smaller class size
- 30 minutes from home so I could stay close to friends and family which is honestly very important to me
- Could live from home M3/M4
- I want to match back into a NJ program, preferably RWJ, so I could potentially earn the rising stars scholar award ( 20k every year for 10 years)
- Match list is great and they consistently match neurosurgery (something I am interested in)
- Fully P/F
Cons:
- I've been at Rutgers for the past 5 years now
- No grants/scholarships given so COA will be fully loans (already racked up 67k from undergrad and masters)
- scholar award is not guaranteed
- the building itself is pretty old, though they will be opening the Helix in 2025 when I would be an M2
- not many EC activities I can really do here
SKMC Pros:
- Philly was much more lively than Piscataway
- Already received a scholarship bringing the tuition even below that of RWJMS and I will potentially be earning more as I applied for need based aid
- Spanish Medical Program seems very interesting and something I would love to participate in
- Totally new experience far from home so I could just grow as a person
- Bigger fan of their curriculum layout.
Cons:
- Far from home, would have to live there my M3/M4 years. Would also not have my usual support system here
- class ranked into thirds
- larger class size, more difficulty standing out and getting research?
- cars for clerkships
