this is directly for kaplan
-atoms found in or beyond third period can have more than eight valence (i.e. S) electrons, since some can occupy d-orbitals


But, S is in 3rd row and doesn't have a d-orbital. So, is the example kaplan gave wrong? Thanks!
 
perhaps it is talking about ions...although its really rare that a fully filled atom would gain more electrons...
