Hello, I will be attending NYU in the fall. I had two questions and I was hoping some NYU students could help me out.

1. Is commuting from Staten Island reasonable?

2. Is there any material I should review before the start of class?

Thanks! Any advice would be appreciated.

I live in the city...2 blocks away from school. Some people do commute, very rarely from Staten Island. Most are from New Jersey, Brooklyn etc. Places that are not nearly as far. If I were you...move into the city.

Don't need to study anything..just relax and enjoy your break.

yea, i second that. a commute more than 1 hour is too much. the long commute may not seem too bad now... It'll hit you in spring semester when you wanna come in on the weekend to practice preps or when you have a morning exam and you realize when you're heading out from school the night before that while other people are studying you will be spending about 2.5 hours commuting.

if you wanna save money, share a place with someone around the school (which could still be expensive), or brooklyn, or jersey city. now a days, i hear you can negotiate rent (not sure if its true, not in nyc anymore, but this is whawt i hear on the news).

good luck.

Thanks for your advise. The only reason I'm interested in living on Staten Island is because I have family there and they have offered for me to live with them for free. This would save a lot of money.

the guy that sits next to me in gds lab commutes from staten island. he is doing fine.

If you're living that far from school, you probably won't be hanging out with many of your school friends in the evening or on weekends. My friend from brooklyn only comes out with us once a month or so... and that's only like a 30 minute commute. It's hard to go out at night when you know you'll have an hour+ commute afterwards...
