Hi all,
So I'm graduating in 1.5 years (December 2007) with an English major and will have no pre-dental requirements completed upon graduation. When do I begin applying for post-bacc programs? What will they be looking for in applicants? My school is UC Berkeley and currently I have a 3.54 gpa, which I am working on bringing up a little if I can. Thanks. 😀

if i was in your shoes, i would do the prereqs now while you are an undergrad. you might have to postpone your graduation.

if you are approaching the max units allowed for an undergrad, then i would recommend an unstructured postbacc at a local university (state university recommended since it's cheaper). schools have different admissions processes so you're going to have to call them to figure it out.

I personally would take the other approach. But it totally depends on what kind of science student you think you are. Although I know nothing about dental prereqs beyond the fact that many pre-dent folks can be found in postbac classes, it's probably advantageous (albeit more expensive perhaps) to get a strong GPA in your undergrad, and then pick up the sciences after. Most of the structured/formal postbac programs will prefer you having had none of the prereqs anyhow. To try and pack in nothing but sciences in a year or two of undergrad at the end could rapidly tank your GPA and end your chances -- you never want a major downward gpa trend.

Thanks, ya I am definitely going to go with the post-bacc for the science courses. Is it generally one year in advance when you apply for the post-baccs? And, can you start your post-bacc in the spring semester. (I am graduating at the end of a fall semester.) Thanks again!

Most postbacs start during the Fall cycle. Meaning you should start applying in the second semester of your senior year. Deadlines are typically May/June for August start dates. I dont hear of too many post-bacs that start in the spring (a few but not too many since it interferes with most post-bac students coming right out of college who graduate in the spring)
