I am curious, I know many of you have seen the classified ads in CAP today for an AP/CP position in a 25 person group in Sacramento CA. They have been seeking a candidate as long as I have been reading CAP Today. Anyone know the story with that group. Same goes for Genoptix - What's the story?

22-26 person group. Covers Sutter Hospitals. Owns a histology lab in the Midtown area of Sacramento which processes..get this....over 150,000 surgicals. Fairly impressive volume. Paps out the 'ying yang' as they are the Quest Diagnostics subcontractor as well (read:they get paid 10 cents on the dollar to read Quest slides LOL). HUGE coverage area, although Ive seen much bigger, which stretches from Davis to Auburn (google maps that..).

Obscene turnover secondary to likely very high volume stress for junior members and the lack of Sacramento to have alot of appeal to people who are unfamiliar with the area.

Large groups also have LOTS of drama, I doubt this is much of an exception.

If I was seriously looking at it, I would get a local attorney to look into whether the histology lab will be part of your future ownership rights, whether it has retired silent partners, what liabilities the companies have atm etc.

This mega group has actually split multiple times to give birth to a bunch of different groups all over Northern California.

Genoptix-Founded originally by non-MDs who had very little idea what they were doing. Almost was a complete non starter because it was so shunned by academically trained pathologists. Based in So Cal, Carlsbad area I think..dunno. Anyway I dont like Carlsbad.

Saved, I guess...when they hired 10-15 foriegn hematopathologists from the Middle East, Syria or Egypt I believe...yeah that is wierd I know.

Thought they could capture USLABs marketshare by using direct to oncologist marketers, which suceeded on very small level mainly because many oncologists are idiots.

Spent a TON on software development, I can only imagine the level of red they swim in.

Overall stupid business model if you ask me, but no one did.

Thanks LA - I appreciate the insight.

How can you not like Carlsbad!?!?? 😕

I've heard those guys don't pull in the loot you'd expect with an anatomic lab. Plus, they make you do stuff like buy your own scope. 👎
