SAE Results

My PD forwarded an email to us today saying the SAE's have been mailed out and should arrive before April 7th.
That depends on what your program is like. Some programs use the SAE for what it is intended (as means for residents to find out what areas of PMR they're weak at), while other programs use the results of the SAE as an advancement tool (u must get a certain score in order to advance to the next PGY; or if u score below a certain score, u must get additional tutoring from faculty).
So if you go to one of the later programs, I'd suggest becoming a member of the AAPM&R, then downloading all the old SAEs they have (2001-current) and learning by doing those questions. Otherwise, the "Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Board Review" book is great...I'd just wait until the new edition comes out (supposedly this Fall, but they've been pushing it back for years).
I have heard that the questions are a little out of date anyway so should I still wait for the new book. How are Braddom or Delisa if used for SAE prep?

just got my scores back today, so now i can give advice i'm confident about. i'm a pgy2, but this is the second year taking the SAE (at LSU we take it during our pgy1 too). i've gotten amazing scores each year from only studying the old SAE exam questions...and paying some attention during lectures. 🙂 but really, read the old questions AND the answer explanations. you have to know what the answer to a question is AND why the other answers aren't correct. they rarely ask the same questions again (i think i remember 2-3 repeat questions this year). so know the answers enough so that if they ask the same question in a different way, you'll get it correct.
also, don't stress during the exam b/c u feel like you've missed a ton of the questions. this year, i got 62 questions wrong...out of 200 (last year, i got 92 wrong). you're gonna miss a ton, BUT SO IS EVERYONE ELSE.
so bottom line is, don't worry about studying Braddom/DeLisa/Cuccurullo for the SAE. now studying for the board exams is completely different...and i have no advice for that.

Our PD said he had them and he was going to review them before giving them to us. He told us last Thursday.
ours back too. I was pleased. Whats a target percentile you should shoot for if you are a PGY2? Do these scores correlate somewhat with board scores?
Yes, there does appear to be a correlation between success on the SAE-R taken in the PGY-4 year and success on the written boards. A correlation between USMLE or COMLEX scores and written board scores has also been shown across multiple specialties, including PM&R. Basically, if you are good at standardized tests, you will do well on Part I of the boards.
