While they're still fresh in your minds:

What were some of your favorite posters/abstracts/talks at SAEM?

...and building off of that, what do you think is the most promising facet of EM today?

My favorite was the consensus conference on KT. But that might be because it was abotu all I attended as it sucked up a big part of my life that week. 🙂

I did love the 'give to the research fun' lecture on the plenary lectures. 😀

I missed Roger Lewis' talk, however, as it appears to be very similar to last year's talk, I suspect it was excellent.

I was only there for the first two days, but there is no doubt that ED overcrowding is likely going to be the most significant challenge for Emergency Physicians and departments in the near future. Not only was the oral session packed, but I heard quite a bit of anecdotal stuff that is chilling. Some EDs are using as much at 1/2-2/3 of their beds holding patients that have been admitted to the hospital. While no one has really been able to prove it, there is general belief that these long waits will lead to poorer outcomes. Worse, as EDs and hospitals are all so different, there isn't a really easy way to impliment and test new strategies for fixing the problem.

The best part of SAEM had to the drinks I had on Wednesday night, followed by sushi, followed by more drinks, followed by more drinks, followed by late night take out, followed by an 8am session. I'm still not sure how I was awake for that one.

I went Wed-Sat and had a great time. I liked Bob Neumar & Roger Lewis's stuff, the pro/con debate for pharma involvement in research, the visual diagnosis challenge, a poster aboout recognizing human traffcking in the ED, and the basic science, of course. It was great seeing the diversity in research - from knockout mice to addressing disparities in health care, it was all there. I also went to Blue Chicago and had a great time listening to the blues, ate Italian Beef at Portillos, and tried a "hot diggity dog".
Things wrapped up with a very nice medical student symposium and Herbert Hern gave us med students a talk on career prospects in EM that was SO inspiring I wanted to just follow him to Highland and start training under him right away. 😍. I was super impressed by the fabulous residency fair from which I had to leave early to catch my flight 🙁

In terms of promise, I am very excited about addressing T1 and T2 blocks in the translation of research to emergency medicine, and I think that the ED will prove a rich enviroment for translational research. I also love the promise that, no matter what happens to our crippled health care system, we will be there to catch ANYONE who falls.
