What are some good safe schools you recommend?

ie. one of the easiest of the US schools to get into.. except i don't want to go to Montana, etc..

for those with Harvard, Mayo, etc hopefuls... imagine you had a 3.4 GPA 30 MCAT..

Go to princetonreview.com, click to the pre-med section, and look some up using the med school finder.

The pc people well tell you that there is no safe school. But you should look at the schools with average numbers lower then yours and maybe those could be considered safeties for you.

Usually, your state school is your best bet.

i'm one of those who says there's no such thing as a safety school - if a school gets an applicant whose numbers are way above their average and it's obvious that they'd rather go to a 'better' school if they have the chance there's no way the school will waste an acceptance only to have it turned down months laters while other candidates who actually want to go to that school are left in the dust. med schools don't just throw acceptances out like candy to everyone who 'deserves' to get it - they look for the people who best fit what they're looking for and who will be happy at that school.

plus the whole application process seems like such a crapshoot - you should be happy to get in anywhere.

I've been having this nagging feeling that I;ve not applied to enough schools...I;ve only applied to 11, and my MCAT is 26, on the low side. Everything else stats-wise is good, but I don't know. I keep telling myself I can add more and resubmit after Aug. Scores come in, but what do you all think? God, am I nervous as all crap. 😱

No state school in California is a safe bet.

True dat' - but CA is an exception. States like Texas, South Carolina, Ohio, Wisconsin - those residents have it real nice.

Drexel, Temple, St. Louis U, MCWisconsin, MCV, EVMS, NYMC, Albany and GW.

They aren't really safeties, but they're schools who are open to accepting dudes with lower scores.

They're all allopathic schools, so again, no safeties. Just consider them open-minded.

no safe schools. people would consider schools like GW, BU (just randomly picked 2 out of the many perceived "safety schools") to be safety schools, but that stigma also attracts a record # of applicants who prolly have the same profile you do. I think last cycle BU had around 10K applicants and other "safety schools" had high number of applicants as well. your chances of getting accepted into those schools are not as good as you think.

wow...for us FL residents though, I think USF is a relatively safe bet...they accept 0% out of state applicants!

safety school eh? it doesn't exist young stallion....your best bet is just to apply to a wide range of schools, and in doing so you will find your "safety." You might think that if you apply to schools that are "easy" to get into you'd be a lock there, but remember that schools are just as interested in filling their class as they are with selecting the best students. If you're overqualified at an "easy" school they might (I stress might) turn you down because they think you view them as a safety school and are unlikely to matriculate. Almost everyone I know has the story of the supposed safety school that rejected them while far better schools offered them a spot. So, to reiterate what gets said time and time again on this board, apply to a wide range of schools, getting into one school in particular is often a crap shoot, good luck!

You might also consider a DO school, if you like the DO philosophy. It is still a US school, and the avg gpa/mcat may be lower. Check it out.

I can't help but laugh when an out-of-stater applies to GW and BU, thinking that they are safety schools. Sure, the average GPA and MCAT for those schools is not overwhelming, but the acceptance rate is.

GW out-of-state acceptance rate: 5.4%
BU out-of-state acceptance rate: 3.8%

Looking only at the acceptance rates, it would appear that I have a better chance of getting into UCSF (in-state acc rate: 6.8%) then I do either BU or GW. (And who want's to live in DC, anyway? F*#%ing rains every G*$ D@!# day!) 🙂 😉

Safety schools are for folks with 35/3.9; many years volunteering in underserved, spanish speaking clinics; published research; awesome personality and lots of leadership. For normal people, we call these schools "attainable," not safe. Keep in mind that these attainable schools, just like the unattainable, have acceptance rates below 10%. That's why you apply to many schools.

BU out-of-state acceptance rate: 3.8%

BU has so many "special entry" programs that lead to admission to the med school. These skew the stats a bit, leading people to believe that they are easier to get into.
