I have read that dentists start at about 95K and then get to 145K. How long does that take? How much are dentists making in their second and third years?

In most associate situations there is no 'salary', but percentage of production. As such, there is no rule that you'll start at any level and progress. It all depends on patient flow, your speed, your skill, etc. Every situation will be different.

If your an associate for 2-3 years right out of school. Then probably grossing a little over 120k. If your associate for 2 years then buy into a practice you can easy start grossing 160-200k. If you take out a loan and create a start up your own, expect a slow "progression" as your patient base grows.

It all depends on how you approach it.

I'd say best case scenario. Assuming associate (2 years) then buy into practice (3rd year) and assuming you have average to slightly better than average business + communication skills. It would look like this: this is gross without any loan money deducted, etc.

1. 118k
2. 126k
3. 196k
4. 211k

--- I think after this point it is up to you. You could reach 350k by year 5-7 or you could top out at 225-240k. All depends on how you run your business, the quality of work you do, the scope of work. Blah blah. My dentist literally went Air Force Dentist to buying out local dentist and grossed 312k for his first year out. Granted I truly believe he is amazing businessman and dentist in general. But still. Its all dependent on your abilities.

PS (this is Texas rates in dollars, I know in Cali/NY 300k is like lower middle class lol).
