Is there any released information on a dentists salary the couple years out of dental school? Is there any difference in salary based on the school attended? (For General Dentists)

Very curious. Thanks! 😉

I think someone said that the national average overall for general dentists was about 115K.... Im sure that a rookie though would probably be a under that though.

From what I heard at school interviews, when you are first right out of school, your pay is about 80 to 90K.

I don't know of many salaried positions in private practice, but here we go:

If you are going to be an associate and work for a dentist, you are usually paid on your collections. Typically this is from 30-40% with 35% being the norm. From this is deducted a certain amount from lab work(I.E. crowns dentures, etc). So, in order for you to earn 100k for instance working 220 days a year you would need to produce roughly $1400/day(not including lab costs). Now, this is easy to do, but a lot of practices don't allow for that sort of production until you are well established in the practice. Sometimes they will offer a draw against your production(I.E. give you $400/day or something and resolve any differences at the end of the month). I am not saying that 90k or even 100k isn't possible, but you have to work hard at producing. Mind you, when I gave you that production of $1400/day that means that you are totally fee for service. If you take any sort of insurance there is always a deduction due to the fact that they never pay what you charge for a procedure so that production number may go up. I hope I haven't confused anyone.

National average for general dentists is actually closer to $140k.

Dentists held about 152,000 jobs in 2000. Almost all dentists work in private practice. Median annual earnings of salaried dentists were $129,030 in 2000. Earnings vary according to number of years in practice, location, hours worked and specialty.

Self-employed dentists in private practice tend to earn more than do salaried dentists. A relatively large proportion of dentists is self-employed.

Generally speaking, dentists earn more in the northern states right (like NY, boston....etc) compared to places like mississpi or georgia ??
I'm just curious

jam21 - not necessarily. Cities in the NE have more dentists than they need and places in Georgia and Mississippi probably have places hurting for dentists. So there is potential for a higher income with fewer competitors in GA and MS.

I am in the process of my undergrad work, and have performed light research in the field of dentistry. I have read a little bit of everything posted here except quoted from Princeton Review. I don't know how accurate the information is; however, I understand Princeton Review to be a worthy source. Well are you ready for the details??? Here goes nothing:
😱 😱 😱 😱 😱 😱 😱 😱

Average hours per week: 50
Average starting salary: $50,000
Average salary after 5 years: $80,000

I hope those figures were a bunch of numerical b.s.

Would appreiciate a respective amount of replies regarding this post...
