Is it possible that two or more prematched residents from the same program and same PG year could be getting paid different amounts? I heard about this from a resident on another forum. Sounds rather bizzare. I can understand if the prematched residents are making less than the residents that matched but why the difference in salary between the residents who prematched? Does this happen?

Gross salary should be the same. Net salary could be different depending on what benefits each individual signed up for (i.e. more expensive health plan, dental, vision vs the basic plan), whether they are with-holding anything in their paycheck, et cetera, et cetera. I can't imagine why gross salary would be different (only exception I have heard of is VA paid residents vs hospital paid. There are some benefits one receives while the others don't but the contracts still state the same number).

Residents from the same program at the same PGY level should receive the same gross salary.

As noted above, the net may differ due to health benefits chosen, number of deductions, etc. but otherwise it should be the same.

There are some unusual cases where the funding does not come from CMS and therefore the trainee might make a different amount. Some friends of mine in fellowship were paid by a foundation and could negotiate a salary which was above that of fellows paid by the PGY level.

My father is a Doctor and he told me the same thing. "I have seen cases where they have they came from the same program and same PG year and get paid different salaries. If it is significantly high? I dont know. But that is definitely unfair.

From what I have heard about these residents is that there is quite a bit of a difference between their salaries mentioned in their contracts.

That's very strange ... some programs even post their salaries on public websites for everyone to see, so there's no room for twiddling with the numbers. I would imagine programs try to avoid salary disparities like this; it can be very demoralizing once known (and it will become known). Bottom line is, generally this does not happen, and if it does, there must be some extremely bizarre circumstances.
