Hey,

This may sound like a dumb question, but does anyone know what an intern earns in the states? (i.e. someone straight out of med school?)

I'm just curious. Here in Ireland, I think it's about ?30,000/$34,800 basic rate, but this is usually around ?60,000/$69,600 after all the overtime they do.

Do you know what it is in your area? Does it vary from state to city to hospital, or what?

I'm just curious as to what I'll (finally) be earning in a few years!

Thanks

Paddy

whoa!!!! residents get paid overtime in ireland?!?!? can i come back and practice in the states after doing a residency over there? 😛

I dunno. I think they do! Like I said, I'm not too sure. I'm almost certain though!

And I said intern, not resident. Ya see, over here after leaving medical school you have to do one year, called your intern year, in order to get registered. It consists of six months of general medicine and six months of surgery, and you have to do it in order to legally practice in this country.

As for coming back to practice in the states, you should do a search in the International section of this site, I think there's about a million threads where this has been discussed before!

Thanks......

Hi PaddyofNine.
I think residency in the US is the same as internship in UK and commonwealth.
I Denmark we have an 18 month internship with a monthly wage of about 3500 USD (including overtime).

I think the average is like 36-38,000, but no overtime.... It goes up very modestly the next year (like 1,000 dollars more)... There is very little difference from program to program in pay.
