Step I Salicylate poisoning

First Aid mentions there is early Respiratory Alkalosis and late Metabolic Acidosis. Anybody know the time frame on those? I got a question presenting with a 3 hour history of salicylate poisoning. I know the obvious answer is a mixed picture but I remembered the word EARLY from FA and chose respiratory alkalosis which was wrong.

I chose the option of metabolic acidosis and it turned out to be right. But I don’t know how. I’m still trying to figure it out. Cuz metabolic acidosis occurs only after 12 hrs.
Before 12 hours, it’s the “early” picture which is respiratory Alkalosis. I was looking for it in the options initially, but there was no option of respiratory alkalosis (ph up, pCO2 down, HCO3- down), so I just went for the option with metabolic acidosis. But I’m still looking for a reason as to why that was the correct answer in this case.

Saw another post on this forum saying early means less than 15 minutes apparently. Let me know if you find anything else. How did you do on it btw? I didn't think it was super easy like everybody on sdn was saying. Ended up with a 81%

I got 78% on free 120.
Tbh, while doing it I was finding it pretty easy so I was disappointed when I saw my % correct.
