Just wondering if anyone else going to SA was going to study this summer and try to test out of BioChem? Do any other schools do this?

have fun with that! only one person managed to do it my year
if it were me i would not bother. just enjoy your last summer

We had several who succeeded, but twice as many that didn't. I wouldn't sweat it -- the course isn't too tough anyway. And you'll have plenty of time to study for exams the first semester if you keep up. Also, if you could do well enough on the test to test out (you need an 80 I think), then you could probably make an A in the course anyway. The extra 5.5 hours of A's in your GPA might help.

Like texas_dds, I think you should just enjoy your summer and relax...come July you'll wish you could. (and texas_dds knows what she's talking about...the best darn Gross tutor I ever had!!!!!)

BTW, if you need a gross tutor in the fall I'll be available. PM me and I can give you my info.

We had 5 people out of about 35 who took it test out this past year. I took it, didn't study for it but did decent for not having prepared. If you know your stuff, go for it. Make sure you look thru the whole manual when managing your study time -- the last few sections are dental related, stuff you probably havent seen before and might take you longer to get down. And I would guess that while yes, the credits help your GPA (however a mere 5.5 of over 200 over the four years), I would have really liked the extra 2 hours of sleeping in on Thursday and Friday mornings, and as for having "plenty" of time to study in the fall... well, I know a lot of people who might tell you otherwise. (But if texdent2be2007 is who I think it is (I haven't been on here in awhile) he is well above and beyond the average person schoolwise - most of the gross tutors are.)
Just my two cents.

I failed the test when I was there, but I sure as hell took it. I didn't study much, maybe a week. You have don't have anything to lose, so take the test. The best thing that happens is you don't have to come to 8:00am biochem, the worst is you lose an afternoon.

As for "the last" summer, you get a summer break every summer in San Antonio, so don't worry that you've got to party 24/7 this summer.

TexDent, you're too kind! Hopefully gross turned out well for you -- I really enjoyed working with you guys.

You'll have enough time to study in the fall IF you make a deal with yourself: something like, "I'm going to study 3-4 hours every day, even if I don't really have anything to study or the tests are a month away." Then, when your buddies are freaking out 3 days before the exam, you will have reviewed and reviewed and reviewed...this will allow you to help them out with the tougher concepts, while improving your understanding -- if you can teach it to your classmates (without looking cocky!), you definitely have it down pat.

When you start in July you'll have two weeks of orientation -- pretty much like summer camp -- where you learn indispensable info like how to turn on your computer and type email. Use this time to get to know your classmates and hang out in the evenings with them. Then when classes start and they're still partying at Far West Rodeo four nights a week, you'll be ready to start studying a little every day. Those first exams sneak up fast (histo hits first, I think), and you don't want to be behind.

Best of luck! 👍 You're gonna do great.

Yep, now we get to do clinic every summer... and don't get me started about how upset I am that 1st and 2nd years are going to have to share lab bench spaces (i.e. you get kicked out when it's not "your turn") until renovations are done... but the good side is that (I hear) the summer clinics are a few hours a day three days a week or something. The bad news is that if you want to do a summer externship you're SOL as far as I can tell (but you'd think they'd make an exemption for that!).
