Hi,
Does anybody know anything about this program?

Also, what does it mean if a program uploaded some of your stuff but not all, does that mean they aren't interested any more?

Thanks

Don't know about the program. To address you second question, my *guess* is that they download things at certain intervals (e.g. when the committee is getting together to decide who to send out invites to), and so they just haven't downloaded the rest of your stuff yet. This theory only makes sense if the stuff they haven't downloaded yet was uploaded more recently ... is that the case?

I suppose a program could also decide they're really not interested, but downloading stuff from ERAS is quick and doesn't cost anything ... so why wouldn't they download everyone's stuff?

I don't know much about the program except that the benefits sound fantastic. As an intern you take q7 call while you are on inpatient psych and that is basically it. The higher-year residents can take call as moonlighters.

Other folks on SDN have posted their thoughts about the San Mateo residency program. Search the archives.

If you do a search within the psychiatry forum, you should find some threads. Click on the "advanced search" option in my signature (or choose "search" towards the top of the forum). On that page you are given a number of options, one of which lets you select the forum or forums within your search. Select "Psychiatry" and then put in your search terms.

San Mateo is a solid community program with some links with Stanford for child psych.

They're also extremely selective for the right people and try to weed out folks who are looking to their program for the ability to do little call and get paid lots to do it. They only take in 4 interns for each class and weigh heavily on whether or not students have done audition rotations with them.

You'd be wise to have good reasons for applying there other than lifestyle factors.

Who are the "right people" they are looking for, what type of people with what type of interests do they want/attract?

It's a true county program, which is rare in California (most are academic programs with county hospitals for training). If you're interested, I'd read over their website to get an idea of their training and apply to do an audition rotation if you're serious about matching there. They have a great program director who would probably be happy to answer specific questions.

There have been some changes at San Mateo. The former Residency Training Director got poached by another school, and now they have a new one as of this year (2012).

I interviewed there last month, from what I can tell, the new Residency Training Director is a total ditz. My interview with her consisted of an hour and a half of her trying to analyze me. I have been analyzed before at interviews...except she was just really bad at it.

She had no idea where she was going with the interview but was trying to act confident and in charge (which made her sound really fake). She kept asking questions based off of misinterpretations of what I said and then tried to summarize my words based off of what essentially were her views. She seems to be one of those types who thought they would be good at psychiatry simply because they have a nice smile and are likeable, not because they can actually have insight into someone.

Anyway, if the Training Director of San Mateo is this incompetent, it really makes me question whether or not the program has gone downhill after the original Director left. Granted, this is her first year. I hope she improves by the time any of the 2012 applicants get there.

This program's been well known to have possibly the cushiest schedule of perhaps any residency (not just psych) in the entire country. Coupling this with location and only four spots each year, I imagine this program is getting insanely competitive, especially considering the publicity it has received on this forum the past few years. Based on the complete one-sidedness of this post (and that it comes from an unknown brand new account) I'm having a hard time not being suspicious of the motives of this post and what the real intent is.

I know nothing about the PD at this program. What I would say is there are some PDs who come off great in person but are essentially snake oil salesman who don't deliver on their promises. There are those who seem fantastic and are. And then there are those who don't necessarily come off that great in a one-time interview but are actually amazing at their job and will go out of their way to part rivers to make sure you get the best experience you can and accommodate your needs. My current PD falls into that latter category. It doesn't sound like she didn't anything terrible so I wouldn't write the program off, or her for that matter, on a single experience.
