Sanjay Gupta, CNN doc, opinions?

Hey all,
I had a chance to interact recently with Dr. Sanjay Gupta, the CNN Reporter. He seems like a great guy. What do you think of his work? Do you think he accurately reports on medical news?

From what I've heard while catching the occasional CNN broadcast, he seems like a very bright and articulate guy.

he did reports in iraq w/ devildocs, that was cool to see

he seems like a really nice guy based on his demeanor on screen, and did ya guys hear about how he tried to perform last-ditch brain surgery in Iraq when there was no other hope for survival? it didnt work out, but at least he tried and didnt try to make a huge deal out of it (like Geraldo did with trying to hunt Saddam)

he really seems like a solid character, tell me how the AMSA presentation goes.

catch Sanjay when I can on CNN & evaluate his educative capabilities. easy on the eyes, talks in plain English & covers a range of important medical topics...thumbs up on that.

not so hot on him being in Iraq. he seemed to put to humane a face on a not not so humane endeavor.

but in all I like Sanjay & think he's an excellent ambassador for medicine.

Actually, he did a couple of brain surgeries while with Devil Docs in Iraq, and at least one was successful. They were emergency surgeries, and the reason he did them was because those patients would have died without having immediate neurosurgery (there was no stationed neurosurgeon in the Devil Docs). At least one of those patients is currently alive and well. I don't know how the other one is doing, or if he survived.

I do like how he responded to questions about it. His attitude was pretty much that it had to be done. He never played up his own role in it.

Devil Docs is a highly mobile medical unit I believe in the Army. It's kind of like MASH, but even more mobile and versatile. They have a pretty complete supply of medical equipment, and even have a fully-equipped mobile OR. They were stationed right near Baghdad with the front line troops, and Sanjay Gupta was embedded with them as a reporter.

No, the Devil Docs are not a part of the Army. They are Navy physicians who are embedded with Marines. The Marines do not have their own doctors, so they are attended to by the Navy.

The name comes from from WWI when the Marines fought the Germans in France. The German soldiers thought the Marines fought like "Devil Dogs" and the name has stuck. That is now one of the common nicknames in reference to Marines. Now, even the medics that fight side-by-side with the Marines are supplied by the Navy and are called Corpsman. History has shown these men to be some of the bravest in combat and the long list of those who have earned silver stars and medals of honor supports this. The Marines they fight with are especially proud and supportive of the corpsman that take car of them and have thus given them the name of "Devil Docs". This name has subsequently been passed on to the naval physicans also.

Funny thing... at all my interviews so far when people have seen my last name they ask me if I'm related to Sanjay Gupta on CNN... which doesn't make much sense given that Gupta is as common in India as Smith is in the U.S....

maybe I'll say yes one time and see what the reaction is

He is happily married with at least 2 or 3 (or more?) children. But then he has other qualifications for the job. He is assistant professor of neurosurgery at Emory, works at Grady Memorial H in Atlanta, just down the road from CNN. I think he also has some forensic medical qualification or something... And he had an internship with H Rodham-Clinton, back in the days.

He'd do a great job. It's kinda odd because surgeon general is kind of a "public health" post and he's a neurosurgeon, but hell he does better jobs at explaining general health issues on CNN (obesity, cholesterol, hypertension) then half the PCP's I see.

I'm no MD/Phd student but I am pretty sure in 2003 when that claim was made he was single. He didn't get married until 2004.😉
