Recently, at the interview for my top choice medical school, I was given a very open ended opportunity at the end of my faculty interview to bring up for discussion "anything we didn't talk about that I would like to"...so I bascially responded with the reasons why I loved the particular school and how it was my top choice"

I cant really see how this coul dhave been bad, unless I sounded needy or begging, which I don't think I did at all...but do you think it really even matters to them or they are just like, everyone wants to go here...don't call us...we'll call you buddy

thanks

It couldn't have hurt, in my opinion. If a school is your TC, by all means, let them know. Write an LOI, even.

In my interview I talked about how bent I was on attending that school, and it worked in my favor.

There ain't nothin' wrong with begging. Beg, plead, write LOI's, just let them know. They will take that into consideration at the end. When two people are equal, they'd rather take the person who's desperately trying to get into their school than student X who'd rather go back to his/her home state.

I think it was fine to let them know how much you want to go there. I figure it can't hurt to let them know that u would really appreciate and love going to school there.

You are not the first person to say that that school is your first choice. They hear that all the time. So nothing to be afraid of.

On a different note, I told a school that they were my second choice. I wonder if that is slightly more cheesy (or carries slighty less weight, or perhaps more) than if I said they were my first choice.

I've been wondering about this...

When you interview for a school you are not thrilled for, do you still tell them that they're one of your top choices and go all out about how great the institution is?

Also... would someone please elaborate a little more on the LOI?

thanx 😍

Yep - I was asked how many schools I applied to, I said I applied to Wake with 13 back-ups. I guess it didn't hurt.

If you're interested, enthusiastically and honestly communicating your desire to matriculate there will not hurt you!

It won't hurt. Every once in a while a faculty will say "man XXXX sounded so insincere" but most of the time (>99%), telling someone it's your top choice (with sound reasons and having a legit shot of admission at that school) can work wonders for you.

You need to change your mindset. For that moment, at least, the school you are interviewing is your top choice. "Wherever you are, that's the place to be". (a Fast Times reference, but it's true).

When I was at my top choice, I told one of my interviewers that I wanted to learn from the docs that inspired me to become a physician. She seemed to like my answer.

If I end up not interested in the school, I still only say positive things to the interviewer, but I never go so far to say that School X is my top choice. It's fine to say

"I would love to earn my MD here."
"I'm looking forward to spending my next 4 years here."
"I am really impressed with the facilities, faculty - I'm confident I will succeed here."
