"Thanks for sharing." I wish I could have seen your face so that I'd know which way you meant that.🙄 I really did get a kick out of the irony of the grade flips. It's a good thing that I only obsess over my learning & not (usually) my grades. I can now become casual and sloppy with my postings because I don't feel so uptight about my sentence structure. Someday I may even take a lit course for the fun of it - IF it is led by a professor who enjoys the subject.

Thank you, farmb, for bringing this post to the front page. I miss seeing it when it goes into hiding. Have you heard anything from anywhere lately? Every time that I see this thread pop up, I get hopeful that someone has heard good news.

Did anyone hear the "Your Day" noontime broadcast on public radio? (I refuse to call it ETV radio!) Dr. DiPette, the Dean at USCSOM, was a speaker. Among other things, he spoke of the 30% anticipated shortfall in the number of physicians within the next several years, what has led up to the anticipated shortage, and ways to alleviate the problem. I wouldn't say that it was as exciting speech, but it was interesting to hear the broadcast.

I've been having a fantastic week now that I'm able to spend every day in the lab. Yesterday was a bit awkward. The PI saw me when I arrived and pulled me into the faculty party. I felt very out of place, like an intruder - but at least I got a cupcake out of the deal. Actually, I got something better than that; I got a passcard. So, now I can get into the buildings during off hours. I have a lab key, but had to depend on the trust of strangers to open the main door for me.

I'm sure they didn't get this for me just because I'm such a wonderful person. After this weekend, everyone else from the lab is headed out of town. Someone has to have access to keep our stock alive. Now I have to manage not to accidentally break or kill anything important while I'm on my own for the next month.

This is my first vacation in a year. I hope everyone else enjoys their holidays as much as I am. I also hope to hear that some of you get the "gift" you most desire this season.

In Europe, they let in many more people, and about 25% fail out. (it may be more) What a novel way to get the truly qualified people into the profession.

Let us all in. It will work out.

There was no sarcasm in my post HB, I was actually thanking you for sharing 🙂.

Interesting about the MD shortfall. I wonder if this is due to the boomer generation aging. If so, maybe there is a long-term anticipated reduction in the required number of medical care personnel once the boomers are all worked through. I'm just speculating, of course.

On my end, I do have some news. I finally got all my LORs submitted (took over 6wks, I certainly didn't anticipate that) and am now scheduled for interviews at MUSC (2/1) and USCSOM (2/6). I know I'm late in the game but, honestly, I'm happy and excited to be in the game at all.

I read your post about DiPette's speech - he's a pretty incredible guy. If I had a choice and chose USC over MUSC, he would be one of the top 2 or 3 reasons. He has an open door policy, so if you live in Columbia feel free to drop by and introduce yourself. He met with the graduate students for a Q&A to discuss the direction of new research. IIRC, he was the first physician to inject someone with beta blockers - he worked in the lab that developed them.

You mentioned waiting to get a phone call to get off the waitlist. Have you heard that the class is completely filled, and they've already made an official waitlist? I thought that didn't usually happen until March or so. Thanks for any info anyone can shed on this process!

I don't believe that is the case. I was told at the interview that they fill the class on a schedule - so many a month for so many months. I am under the impression that the admissions committee is still meeting each month and accepting people from interviews and off the waitlist using some scoring criteria.

Max, it's good to hear that DiPette is well respected AND well liked. I don't know how I missed your post about Bolander's lab until tonight. 😕 No, that's not the lab I'm in. Does he work with mice, or the cell lines only? He does sound interesting. I'd love to branch out and try other research along the way, but can't see myself wanting to leave the lab I'm in to do it. I'm VERY happy (though sometimes a little stressed) working under my PI. He's going to push me to develop my abilities well, and he's a really cool, somewhat offbeat, person.

For those of you still in school, I hope that you've been thoroughly enjoying the break. Mine has been busy and enjoyable. I'm relieved to say that I managed to not destroy the lab or set everyone's projects back while they were gone, and did get most of the work done developing a new webpage to add to the lab's site, and kept my own research moving forward. It's been a productive holiday.

I'm looking forward to the Spring semester. It's going to be interesting.

I will be waaaaiting another year to be an official student at USC. Over the holidays my dad at least made some of the necessary changes so that they will consider me a resident by then. The whole thing has been a PITA, but we've managed to have some really good things come out of it.

That's the Humid Update. I'll probably be waiting longer than anyone on this thread.

Hi everyone, I'm farmb and I've met some of you before. I am now officially a SC med school applicant in waiting. I Interviewed at MUSC on Friday. I felt like it went well and I really liked what I saw. Fingers crossed!

I haven't heard any hard data - it's really tough to say. Did you get waitlisted or put on hold? They're very different things.

I'm waiting to see if I get a letter on Monday before I speculate. My mailman looks almost more sad than I am when he has to say nothing came.

They claim that letters go out the Thursday following Tuesday's ADCOM meeting, but so far I would caution counting on that. It's no knock against them, they've had a rough app year - computer crash, tons of apps, etc. Also, if you're on hold and they don't make a decision, you won't hear anything - so they may have sent them out Thursday and I'm/we're in for another month of waiting.

Ahh - on hold means that you're being considered every month until March or April. If you're not accepted/rejected by then, you're on the waitlist.
