My GPA sux and yes I love the under 3.o club but I don't know if I am ready to be slapped with all those rejection letters. I am applying to a lot of schools including my state school. I am currently in the process of finishing my app. Also am studying for my DATS and will take it soon...Also instead of staying in school for the full 4 years i got a b.a. in chem and am graduating this december. i don't know about grad school instead i going to work with a family member who is a dentist who needs handling 2 practices....Also my gpa doesn't have the ideal upward trend...instead the downward trend; I had great grades freshmen year and thats it...HELP...

dont fret... if you want to become one you will. thats what i keep telling myself..

my gpa aint that great, 3.1 MGPA and 3.8 SGPA, not 2 great, but i still needs work..
im sure if you convince schools you really want to become one you will, the only person that can tell you u cant or cannot become a dentist is yourself..
enough bs, stop surfing and start studying

Try. It doesn't hurt. I have to admit though, getting the rejections sucked last year. I am a reapplicant and well, my cGPA was like a 3.3 and my science like a 2.9. But I boosted my science GPA by .4 pts this year. Anyway, last year, I applied to 15 schools and didn't even get an interview. And to be honest, it was really sad. But if you really want it, go for it. You never know. And besides, (this was my logic) if you take a year off isn't that the same time you are losing if you tried and didn't get in. I mean, yeah, it will cost some money, but what if you do get in. Furthermore, it shows determination. 🙂

Take care. But ultimately, it is up to you.

The reason most of us apply to many schools is because we will be denied. It's part of the game, no matter what your stats are. Even well qualified students have received the dreaded rejection letter.
Good luck on the DAT.

I'm not rich, so I wouldn't waste a ton of cash sending out apps to every school if your GPA is below a 3.0, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't try either. You first need to rock that DAT. Anything below a 19 and I think you should save your money, but that is just my opinion

Also, look at http://www.predents.com/ and see how other people did. If you look at the 2006/2007 people listed at the school of your choice you can see what the GPA and DAT scores were like. Just click on them and it shows who got an interview, accepted and rejected. It is a good way to judge your strengths compared to others. It's not perfect data, but it helps.

I had a low GPA, got rejected, and now I am reapplying after working to bring it up. It took a couple of years in my case, but I think I am a better applicant now. I have a ton more experience shadowing, including vol work at the d-school in my area, and I know that extra time looks great because I have talked to many of the profs at the d-school for their input. It might sound like an odd thing to do, but besides advance science courses, I took business classes and art classes to bring up my GPA post-bac. They were easy A's. If you really have a passion for dentistry then you do what is needed to get in.

Either way, yes or no, it is just a piece of paper. So keep working toward your goal and good luck.

I know several people who applied three times. Sometimes it comes to that. Luck of the draw mostly because these guys would have been able to hack it in dental school three years ago too. It shows determination and perseverence. Keep going, do a post bacc if you have to and drive it home!

People with 4.0s and stellar DATs get rejected every year. There's so much more to your application than numerical stats -- so focus on those and you definitely have a shot.

Apply to NYU. We're a little "easier" to get into than most schools but it's mostly because the cost of living in NYC scares people away. But the school runs like butter and graduates many great dentists every year. And the school is only moving skyward!

In the end though, the only thing out of your control is your gpa. Rock the DATs, LORs, Personal statement, etc and get your app out asap. The interviews will come rolling in!

The total number of applicants for each school is about 3-4000 for the 50-100 available seats, so naturally, the vast majority of those are rejected. You have 60-80 people trying for each seat at any specific school.

Each student applies to maybe 10-15 schools. If you factor that in, there really are only about 5x as many applicants as there are seats in dental schools available in any given year.

1:5 doesn't sound so bad does it?

Rejection letters are part of the game.

Who said that quote about missing 100% of the shots you don't take? It's appropriate here. No one has to know about how many schools rejected you. Nobody will know but you. Apply when confident but don't worry about the rejection letters. All they are is character builders. They will make you appreciate it more when you get in. I framed my first rejection. I believe it was Pitt.
