I'm hearing a lot on here that people from UCs which aren't UCB, UCLA, and UCSD are "absent" from groups of people others have met at interviews. This is kind of scary, so I'm just wondering if there is any specific website, source, book that lists how many people get into medical school from each undergraduate institution. Or if anyone has the statistics just off the top of their head 😀

You can do a quick search in MDapp to give yourself the 1st impression.

That's actually what scared me. After reading about it I looked up MDapps and under Interviewed/accepted I saw a lot of UCB and UCLA but not so much UCIs :[

I would definitely NOT go by mdapps at all. A good percentage of students go to med school from my undergrad when compared to other schools, but you NEVER see the school on mdapps.

you will not be held back by your school, if you have a good GPA and MCAT. you also will not get enough help from your school name if you have insufficient MCAT, GPA, or ECs.

SOOO many UCI and UCD kids going to medical school it's not even funny!

But the previous posters make extremely valuable and true comments:

1) MDApps is not representative of the general applicant pool. While I admittedly haven't analyzed it closely, I feel comfortable stating that MDApps data tends to come from the more neurotic, driven, obsessive students (myself included), which - it could be argued - come disproportionately from the more elite schools (I am ironically an exception to this). But the take home point here is that MDApps is not the "entire picture" by any stretch.

I think the exceptions to point #1 come only in the cases of schools at the extremes (i.e. MIT vs. Podunk St, Harvard vs. Southwest Home Schooling College). But even in these cases, the applicant with superior performance will typically get the nod. That's what is so great about that terrible MCAT exam, it gives EVERYONE a chance to shine.

2) It's not about the size (school) it's about the motion of the ocean (GPA/MCAT/ECs/Personality). Personality is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO important. I think it gets talked about WAY too infrequently by advisors. Of course you need to "get your foot in the door" with your numbers, and you certainly can still get in while being a jerk, but if you come off as an authentic "healer" type person, it goes a long way.

I feel so much better 😀

Man everyone is a pre med at UCI no joke its crazy here. Like others said MDapps is not worthwhile when comparing who gets in. All the UCs tend to put lots of kids in medical school and going to the big 3 UC schools isnt going to make a whole lot of difference for getting admission to med school. The only time it will come into play is for example lets say you go to UCI. UCI does tend to like its own students as do almost all undergrad schools with a med school. So in UCIs 1st year med class there will obviously be more UCI kids then any other school, but that is probably also due to the fact everyone who does undergrad there applies there also. Point is dont worry😉.

Also if you want UCI gave us the stats of how many of their kids applied to med school and got in and all that other stuff. I could post it if you wanted. I wont be home until tomorrow though so you can just pm if you are interested and i can get them to u.
