The global financial crisis (GFC), coupled with Government policy in the pharmaceuticals area, is having a severe impact on community pharmacy across the world.
This is in turn having a major impact on pharmacists' wages. This is because the first lever that a business enacts is to cut staff and reduce wages costs.
Many pharmacists in Australia would be unaware that there is no minimum wage for individual professions in many countries. There is only the protection of overall minimum wage.
The following global snapshot of work undertaken by the Guild shows why community pharmacy needs to remain viable and the profession united in this time of Agreement negotiation.
Comments by some pharmacists will only cause damage to their own remuneration in the long term and the overseas evidence is there for all to see.
USA
There are 110 pharmacy schools in the United States with the number of schools doubling over the last eight years.
Prior to the GFC, pharmacy was booming but the new Medicare Part D arrangements together with the GFC have caused pharmacists' wages to be slashed.
There is now an oversupply. In many US states, pharmacist wages have been cut in half with remuneration average falling to under US$40,000 in states like California.
As of 24 July, 2009, the minimum wage in the United States by Federal law is a mere US$7.25 an hour. There is no minimum pharmacist wage in place.
United Kingdom
The minimum wage in the UK is £5.73, with no minimum profession wage in place. Generic medicines policy and the GFC have caused wages to fall for pharmacists in management positions by 33 per cent.
Many of the pharmacy chains are happy to take pharmacists from other EU countries. To them, the wages seem fine compared to the wage in their country of origin.
To corporate pharmacy owners, wages to pharmacists are a mere business cost and they are ruthless in their approach. Some chains actively recruit from other EU countries.
Ireland
The situation in Ireland is quite dramatic, with wage rates for pharmacists falling from €50 an hour to €15 an hour in a mere 18 months in some areas.
The minimum wage is currently €8.65 an hour. The reduction in pharmacist remuneration by dramatic Government policy is well documented and pharmacy and the Government are in court at present.
New Zealand
Even one of our closest neighbours does not have a minimum wage for individual professions. On 1 April, 2009, the minimum wage was a mere NZ$12.50 an hour.
In community pharmacy, wages have fallen by 25 per cent over the last 18 months. The first impact was shown on pharmacist relievers, who reported only half the amount of hours being available compared to a year ago.
Australia
The vast majority of Australia's registered pharmacists are employed in community pharmacies. It is vital that community pharmacy remains viable to ensure these pharmacists keep their jobs and at a wage levels that they currently enjoy.
In Australia, the Guild is fighting for a fair Agreement to ensure that all pharmacists remain in jobs. The growth in pharmacy schools and 1,400 graduates a year is adding further pressure.
The critics of community pharmacy from within our profession, who incorrectly believe community pharmacy owners are faring well and are calling for cuts in the Agreement, should keep in mind the jobs of their pharmacist colleagues.
It was the Greek fable author Aesop who said, "United we stand, divided we fall."

First, what does federal minimum wage have to do with this. Second, there is a minimum pharmacist wage. $7.25 😉. Third, salaries have not been cut in half.

Stick this thread in the sky is falling thread.

I think what he was getting at is that there is nothing to stop corporations from cutting our wages. They will be able to pull pharmacists off the street for less. The ball is in their court.

He said wages HAVE been cut in half. They have not. I agree that an over supply of pharmacists will allow companies to offer low wages, and yes some pharmacist will except those wages. That, however, is the downside of working for someone else.. This has also been discussed to death which is why i suggest adding it to the sky is falling thread.

I agree. Also pharmacy schools have NOT doubled in eight years. More doom and gloom non-since.

Agree with UNMorBust. You are what you make of your degree. The beauty of freedom is that if you want to go up and beyond of what the "masses" do you can. No one is forcing you into this. Even burger flippers can make millions, it's all about what you want to do with your freedom. If you want to sit and whine about how your salary might go down then no one can really help you, sorry.

I think that's the going wage for burger flippers in Cali, sadly cost of living is so high there said flippers can't even afford iPhones.

Seriously though, what kind of burgers would you have to flip to make millions?

Vegas right? Im so there. 😀
lol I was thinking of Richard and Maurice McDonald. but I'm sure there are some prized hot selling joints over there too haha. I've never been to Vegas so I don't know the good places there 🙁 I've actually never been west of texas lol. but yes I'm sure they make a lot 😛

Richard was a burger flipper!

"In 1984, Richard McDonald served the ceremonial 50,000,000,000th (50 billionth) McDonald's burger, having cooked the first one.[4]"

They received 2.7 million for selling the chain to a milkshake salesman. A lot of the pioneers of fast food started out as cooks actually, Burger King, Wendy's, what-a-burger, chick-fil-a, etc etc.

Ok, but you cannot be a burger flipper and make that kind of money. You can start that way but obviously you have to move up. I wouldn't call the owner of a restaurant a burger flipper or the owner of a grocery store a bag boy. It's disingenuous.

Haha you are hilarious. I think I'd subscribe to your posts if I could!

This is my last reply for now cause SDN is killing me with the slowness but I think the point I wanted to make is that you make of what your future will be. If you want to listen to others and chain yourself, chances are you won't succeed.

A lot of of people told others who are very successful today that they wouldn't be worth anything and to stop wasting their time. The reason they succeeded though was that they didn't listen and intended something different for themselves. If you have that sort of drive and ambition, then you don't need to worry about what clowns have to say. Most people who don't know anything about anything are the loudest to speak out anyway.

Right I know but that is exactly my point. If you have the drive to succeed you will, regardless of how others "predict" your future. you get what I mean?

Be willing to relocate and have a lot more options.

Stay away from saturated areas.

I'm pretty sure you'd agree that having a good job is more important than living in an area where you can go out every night.

So what if you live 30 min - 1 hr from a major downtown area? You have a car and can drive. We all drive to go to work. So why is driving to go hang out much different from the morning commute?

LOL yes you are. But hey trophys don't normally take care of the house as well as you do.

You don't think so?? I guess not... to be honest I don't really know what the "trophy wife" model actually is, besides going to functions and looking hot. I assumed that some domestic duties would be included...

Werd. Get me a minivan and I am ready to roll.

One of the 300-hp Honda ones would be nice!

Thats what Nannys and maids are for.🙄

You need a dodge.

Newly hired pharmacists would be the ones offered lower wages.

They are still hiring pharmacist where my husband works at the same rate as they have been for years. And my husband just got a raise.

The only pharmacists that I have heard of making $40,000/year are on residency.

Ugh, I would never be OK with strangers in my living space. The Army barracks were just hardly tolerable for 9 weeks. I would never pay people to actually be in/live in my house.
My issue is with people touching me. I Can't have a stranger massage me.:scared:

I just got a raise; so much for that drastic pay cut.
I saw that you recently graduated, so I was just wondering did you have any trouble getting a job at all ? It seems that there are a select few who are always complaining and such about the job market or the sate of the profession. But its usually the same people so you can't really consider it valid.
I've look on career websites and it seems there are openings also.

I also saw you graduated from UIC, where you able to find a job around this area (chicago/suburbs) ? cause I am from the same region, and was kind of hopping to stay

I am currently in the Milwaukee North district. I have a staff position in a store in the city of Milwaukee. From what I have heard for both the RxS and my RxM, the Milwaukee market (north, south, and west) hired a number of new pharmacists this year. It is uncertain at this time how many if any new rphs will be hired for 2011. The market is well staffed, but not overstaffed at this moment. The last person hired for the Milwaukee North person was someone who agreed to work in the northern part of the district aka the stores between Sheboygan and Two Rivers. Two Rivers is closer to Green Bay than Milwaukee.

I lived in Two Rivers, my four years pharmacy experience was at the Osco (now CVS) right near Two Rivers border (on Lake Michigan). Is it Walgreens or CVS?

Not so far - I just graduated and started my first job (grocery store chain), and my husband recently found out that his uncle (large chain pharmacy w/around 20 years of experience) makes $1 per hour more than
my starting salary!!

Walgreens. The Manitowoc/Two Rivers Walgreens were just shuffled into my district from Green Bay and Fond du Lac stores were given to Green Bay. I had my first closing shift there.

One dollar less an hour! Outrageous! There goes the profession, we might as well go wash cares for a living. At least car washers get a lunch break, plus tips! It's all over for us now, this is just the beginning, soon we will be making less than techs. 🙁

(I hope you know I wasn't aiming that sarcasm bullet at you rxlynn, I just liked your statement so much I decided to use it.)

I may be wrong but i thought he/she was surprised to be making nearly as much as a 20 year veteran. Not disappointed in making less.

I've heard of a pharmacist who said his daughter makes about $15/hr more than he does in retail.

She's a recent grad, and he's been out of school for a while.

I believe you are interpreting her comment correctly. I specified that my sarcasm was not directed at her. It was such a positive comment I just had to use it to poke fun at the doom and gloomers around here.

Cool beans😀👍. Darn gloom and doom spreaders.

Wow. Now we're referencing Australian websites to relate what's happening in the US that site no sources for their claims of facts and figures. The author is the president of the Australian Pharmacist's Guild and is obviously concerned with how the wages for Australian pharmacists have been declining. Being a pharmacist in Australia requires a Bachelor's degree with some internship hours post-grad. Compare that to the US where it is required to have a Doctorate and you can already see how this article is skewed. I for one would have never attended pharmacy school if the wages were only $40k for the simple fact of how much it costs to go to school.

If the average pay for a pharmacist drops down to $40k then I would imagine we would go back to only requiring a Bachelor's for an RPh. There's no way to justify the extreme debt a student would accrue for a PharmD compared to the salary earned.

wow this author is a *****. He doesn't even get his facts straight about how many pharmacy schools have opened up in the past 8 year. he keeps mentioning the minimum wage and how pharmacists don't have a minimum wage. he doesn't take into account that clinical specialists and other fields are pharmacy are occurring...possibly MTM rebursement which will help chains hire more pharmacists.

don't misbelieve me, the price of pharmacists will go down (since there will be an oversupply of pharmacists in the near future).....but it wont go down as drastically as he predicts. No one would want to go to pharmacy school to get yelled at constantly by patients/nurses if they were only getting 40k. Personally, I'd go into a degree with less years/debt.

engineering for 4 years plays more than 40k, so does architecture , so does PA, so does nursing anesthesiologist, so does nurse practicer, heck teachers can make more than 40k!

Engineers are saturated in many markets, Nurse-Anest. is ultra competitive, same w/ NP...

Teachers 3-12 around here make 18-22$/hr and don't step increase very fast... so barely above 40k at the upper range. K-2 is more like $30k annually.

You forgot to add that Architects are a dieing breed. Many end up just doing menial tasks, and very few ever make good money.

What I'm confused about is that barring extraordinary circumstances such as huge undergrad debt, having children, unexpected medical tragedies in the family, high COL areas( which sometimes cannot be avoided) etc., 40k a year is doable for most people provided you live modestly.( that means no buying any bmw 6-series convertibles with while wearing a rubber duck suit with a top hat attempting to imitate Uncle Scrooge living in an upscale condo that costs $4000 a month etc.)

I just don't see it.

Not to sound greedy, but 40K isn't enough for me...only because I have a bucket list of things that require dinero- including children, traveling, and philanthropy. I also want to live in a nice home (although spending 4 grand on a condo is FARRR out of my price range) where I can entertain 😉
