Hi everyone,

I interviewed on Jan. 24th and was told during the interview with Dr. Vorhees that I would be admitted, rejected, or waitlisted on the Monday afterwards. I was placed on the waitlist. I notified my employer and he called a friend that works in administrations and he said the class was full before Jan. 24th and that I had interviewed well so I was put on the waitlist. I saw on Dr. Munroe's FB group that only 10 seats have been reserved as of the end of 2008. Does this all sound kinda fishy?? Sure does to me...

I sincerely doubt that. Unless they accepted EVERY SINGLE PERSON they interviewed, the class wouldn't have been full so fast.

And for some good news, I have my deposit saving my seat at SCCO and I'm giving it up... so maybe that will go to you!

Hello,
I just wanted to let you know, I interviewed on January 24th as well and found out that Monday that I was accepted... and I know of one other person who I kept in touch with that was accepted on that day. However, it seems like a lot of people are only paying $750 deposits and that means they could still give up their seats- only 26 of us have given the full (nonrefundable) deposit and joined the facebook group so far. Hope this helps!

They don't tell you why you are waitlisted until after everyone's deposits are in (in May). Then you must schedule Interview Feedback with Dr. Munroe and she will go over your file with you and what areas were strong, and what was weak.

Not true iVision. The only reason people are waitlisted at this point is because the class was already full since the middle of January. Anyone who is waitlisted has been accepted. Your rank on the waitlist reflects your interview score. Since the middle of January, if you were not put on the waitlist, then you must have been rejected.

Well, like I said, there are at least a few of us who interviewed Jan 24th that were accepted without being put on the waitlist... so maybe the method you're describing has been implemented since then or later in Jan? As for people who only put down half of the deposit to hold seats, their other half is due in May, so a lot will be determined then when some of them choose other schools!

I don't think people are put on alternate list because the class is full. There are only 25 of us who have accepted a seat so far out of 98 seats available. I was put on the dreaded alternate list last year when I applied. They will not tell you anything about where you stand on the alternate list (1st quartile-4th quartile) until the matriculation fee deadline (May 15) and then they have a better idea of what your chances are of making it in the class. Even at that point, they don't tell you why you were put on the alternate list because you still have a chance at making it through. If, by the time the class started, and you did not make it through to the class, they will allow you to schedule an interview feedback with Dr. M so that you know which areas you can work on if you plan on reapplying the following year.

I agree with you. But, I do know for a fact that the class is full at this point (it has been full for 3-4 weeks) and every single person is put on the alternate list or is rejected. If you are put on the alternate list, you are an accepted student, but there is no seat to place you in yet.

I've spoken to several people about the grading system on SCCO interview. I asked many questions about it last year when I was placed on the alternate list. They rank you on a point system during your interview (i.e. professionalism, maturity, etc.), and then they total up the points. If you make a certain # points, you are admitted right away. If you only did okay--just okay during interview (but not bad), then you are place on the alternate list. They don't tell you where you stand on alternate list because your position on it can change throughout the system according to the # of points you accrued. Say you interviewed earlier on and gained position #5 on the list. If someone got a higher # of points than you (but not enough to get admitted right away) then they will bump you to #6. This can possibly happen all the way up until all the interviews are done with. THEN, after all deposits have been made on May 15 and all interviews are done with, then they tell you which quartile you stand in on the alternate list.

Also, there would have only been 3 interview dates by Jan 24 (Nov 15, Dec 13, Jan 24) where they interview 32 applicants/day. Even if every applicant was accepted and paid the full deposit (meaning they are not dropping out), then the most seats they can have filled is 96 people. Like sunshinemusic said, she was interviewed in Jan. 24 and was given a seat. If it were full by end of January, then she would have been placed on alternate list, but she was not.

I don't know where you get your erroneous info. Here is a DIRECT quote from the SCCO website:

"YOU HAVE A “ROLLING” ADMISSIONS PROCESS. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

We begin accepting and processing applications on September 1st of each year. This means that we begin the interview and acceptance process right away. Starting with the first interview day, if you interview well, you will be offered a seat in the entering class. We fill our class with 98 students each year. If you are the one of the early applicants to compete for one of our first seats in a class, your odds are greatest for success. Before the season’s end, we typically run out of “empty” seats to offer. This means that even if you interview well after all the seat invitations have gone out, you will be put on the Alternate List. Conclusion: the earlier in the season you start the application process and interview, the better your odds to be admitted. "

This should end this conversation.

There are also many misconceptions in your response. First off, you fail to mention that SCCO also interviews during the week days (up to 8 people per day). If you do the math, then a class of 98 could have been filled very easily. Also, you said sunshinemusic was interviewed Jan. 24th and given a seat. I said that I was told that spots filled up 3-4 weeks ago. Again, do the math. This falls within the range of Jan 24th.

On rolling admissions: Just because you applied and interviewed early does not guarantee you a spot. It just increases your chances of getting a spot because the earlier you apply, the more # of spots that are available. I was early applicant/interviewee last year and still put on alternate list. There are still grey areas on applicants. I agree that if the class is full, they cannot hand out anymore acceptances, and then they'll be placed on alt. list. Bottom line is that you can be interviewed on the very first interview date and still be placed on alt list. Even during the pre-req meeting with Dr. Voorhees, she said that if you interviewed great you get accepted, if you did just OKAY then you are placed on alt list, and if you blew it completely you get rejected. So you can be placed on alt list if you a) only interviewed okay or b) the class ran out of space.

On SCCO class being completely full, I do not know exactly nor am I claiming that I do know. I am just basing it on how many people are on SCCO's 2013 facebook group since (since in order to be a member you must have paid full matriculation fee) and there are only 25 people on it. The only way you can find out for sure is by contacting Dr. Munroe herself via e-mail or her pre-optometry facebook group.

The only point I am trying to make is that the people put on the waiting list after Jan 24th are put there no matter what because the class is full now. You could have had a excellent interview or an OK one and you would still be placed on the alternate list. If your interview was bad, you would be rejected. That's all and that answers the 1st question asked on this post.

AllSoundsEcho-- I'm curious... where are you getting the information that the SCCO class is filled?

Hmm...I know a lot of people have gotten acceptance letters and that many of those people reserved their seats with the half-deposit, but the class is only 25/98 full (with people who committed the full non-refundable deposit) unless you are referring to some kind of cap on the number of applicants they give acceptance letters to. You can't really know who will be the definite class of 2013 until fall qtr starts and I've heard of people dropping out the day before. AllSoundsEcho, please clarify which you are referring to.

The SCCO staff has said that they have given out 98 acceptance letters. If your info is correct, then only 25 of the 98 have confirmed a seat. The remaining 73 either will give up their seat or confirm their seat by May 31st. The alternate list will then be used to fill the class up to 98.

someone just asked Dr. Munroe: "I've heard that SCCO's 2013 class is full, and that accepted students are now being added to the waitlist. Is this true?"

from Dr Munroe via facebook:

"As far as we are concerned, we have 29 confirmed seats and that's not even for sure! A better way to ASK your question would be: "I' ve heard that all the ORIGINAL seat invitations have gone out? If so, does that mean that an acceptance automatically puts a accepted applicant on the Alternate List?" The answer is "Yes"....BUT (this is a big but!) since we are using rolling admissions and interviewing continuously AND since accepted students have until May 15th to hold a seat with a REFUNDABLE deposit, the Alternate List is really a HOLDING PEN!!! Right now, if you interview well, there is a VERY GOOD CHANCE you will be accepted into the CLASS! Last year we had to accept 166 applicants to net a class of 98! This is a very difficult concept to explain because it is SO dynamic with frequent changes! Don't think of the Alternate List like a dumping ground because we pull off the List continually as class seats become available by withdrawals or deposit defaults...Dr. M"

When I was at my interview, Dr. Munroe also told me specifically that a decent amount of people pay their full deposits ($1500) and end up going elsewhere. So, for those of you on the waiting list who aren't offered a seat after May 15, there is still hope.

I bet a lot of people who are holding seats at SCCO, but are waiting to hear back from UCBSO next week may relinquish their seat if they get some good news. Or you may have to wait for as$holes like me who paid two deposits to extend their decision time (seriously though, two weeks is not enough time).
