in the process of filling out the FAFSA for my first year...i plan to fund my 4 years only with loans (and working if i can). has anyone else been in the same boat? what kind of loans did you apply for and were you able to cover all academic expenses (maybe room and board, too)? i don't mean to make this post exclusively about SCCO; i think any input would help.

Being in graduate school they will throw loan money at you. The government knows you'll be good for it when you graduate.

You'll definitely get enough to cover tuition and room and board. You'll live more comfortably in SoCal if you have roomies but that's totally up to you.

Be careful how much you take out though... if you can live on less than the full amount they offer you.. take less. you'll be suprised at how fast that loan adds up after four years. (even at a state school)

http://www.theaosa.org/ - scroll to the bottom of the page and check out the three articles. I may be in the same boat as you when I start in 2007 and all this stuff sure scares me, especially cause I'd really prefer (as of now) to work private practice and not corporate/commercial. Oh boy...just go forward with our fingers crossed, I guess, and hope our country can fix the baby-boomer and soaring health care costs issues so that we can all build our careers in a similar fashion to the way our parents have done🙂

Has the financial aid application come out yet for SCCO? I was told that they will send out the application out to students, is that true? or I will have to call and set up an appointment with them? Also, does anyone know about when they start the scholarship applications? Thanks

Where did you come up with your calculations? I'm living off of loans too and I don't think I'll hit 150k, but more near 100k.

I am, however, disappointed that my estimate is the average debt people come out with. I thought mine would be below the average by a good deal.

I imagine he is figuring all expenses which include cost of living too not just tuition, books, and supplies. hmm?

yes, bills, rent, food, insurance, bus passes, pencils, paper, etc require money too. plus ill be out of state for the first year.

here are my estimates (approx)
average of 20K a year in school related expenses+ 15000 in living expenses + 5000 in "stuff happens" (and they will) = 40K a year over four years is 160,000, assuming job in the summer and some savings i have, i can cut it down to around 140,000-150,000.
