Does anyone know about SCCO? It is a good school? I was wondering also about my chances of getting in, are they comparitively very hard to get into? What is the town like? If anyone knows any of these please tell me ! Thanks

I really liked SCCO when I interviewed there. The people were very friendly, orange county is VERY nice and had the prices between SCCO and UHCO been equal, I probably would have gone there. The facilities are recently updated, their clinic is HUGE and all the students I talked to seemed really happy there. The only drawback i saw to SCCO was the cost.

The average GPA/OAT for SCCO is 3.3/ 330.. so if you're in that range you're good.

We used to live in Fullerton, like 10 minutes away from SCCO. It is one of the best and most selective optometry schools in the nation. They are very competitive and expect a lot from their students. They are more academic oriented. Your GPA and OAT means lot to them compare to other optometry schools. Most of your classmates are gonna be ppl with high GPA and High OAT and thus instructors expect a lot from them. If you like competitive environment than you don't need to worry about anything else. Because Cali is the place to be. You're gonna have a lot of fun in there. SCCO is about 20 mins away from the Laguna Beach. Believe me you'll love Laguna Beach. The beach is very clean. Numerous students go there to surf or ride their bikes and etc. There's a lot of good restaurants around there. If u like nature you gonna love summer nights at Laguna Beach. People go there just to listen to the sound of waves and hang out with their friends ..oh, I forgot to tell you about Irvine spectrum. If you ever felt that you need some love, make sure you visit Irvine Spectrum because your chances of finding a fast-love is great in there. A lot of students from UCLA, UCI, CSUF hang out in there.

I have about a 3.25 GPA and a good OAT, 340 average. I hope that these are high enough, I would really like to go to school there. Does anyone know about the cost of living in Fullerton?

As far as cost of living goes, think Los Angeles -- it's pretty expensive in the LA area (my dad and stepmother lived in Fullerton for 10 years).

There's a pretty good "Cost of Living" calculator on this web site: http://www.cityrating.com/costofliving.asp . Fullerton isn't listed as a city, so just pick Los Angeles. It'll give you an idea of what it will cost you to live there.

I'm a second year at SCCO. It is a great school. It may seem competitive to get in, but the academic life is not competitive at all because the classes are not curved. I think that the curriculum at SCCO flows very well. Everyone is very friendly, of course, and the faculty are very approachable.

Our lecture halls and library are about 5 years old. We have a gym that's new, too. We're also going to remodel our clinic.

Fullerton is a good city. It is in a college town and it's also right by Brea, which is a really nice neighborhood. The campus-owned condominiums are great and they're right behind the school, and they're really cheap, about $400-$500 per person a month for your own room (put yourself on the waiting list asap). Other apartments are around $500.

Any more questions, just ask!

What were your numbers when applying(gpa, OAT)? Where are you from and are you a part of the PSEP program or WICHE?

Shorty_Sam, I see that you are from Washington, have you visited PUCO's campus?

I'm from Southern California. I went to UCLA and my GPA was around 3.4 and I did really well on the OAT (my average was around 360 or 370). But don't be discouraged cuz many of my classmates had "worse" stats.

SCCO accepts applicants on a points system, so don't forget about the interview portion!

Hi shorty_sam:

To give you a general idea, I got into SCCO with a 3.2 GPA and an average OAT scores (academic average 330).

I felt that SCCO concentrated a lot more on the interview than any of the other schools I interviewed at (I've interviewed at ICO, SUNY, Newenco). I would highly recommend reading current laws and trends in optometry (in optometry journals) before your interview there. Out of all my interviews, SCCO was, by far, the most professional. However, I felt very welcomed on the day of the interview, and I left with a good impression of the school.

Good luck!

Best wishes,

Rosanna
