If he doesn't meet the requirement he shouldn't be allowed to drive the truck. Simple as that. It is not only about him and his family, what about the people who will be sharing the road with him. He is danger to them too. He has to find another job.

in most states you need a VA of at least 20/40 in both eyes in order to legally drive. You either need to pass the DMV test uncorrected or have an OD/OMD sign off on forms after your eye exam. I work at an OD office currently and we get at least a half dozen of these forms a day for people wanting to renew their license. There are a bunch of stubborn ones who refuse to wear glasses but their VA without is 20/60 or so. These are the people that are dangerous on the road. They can kill people. The rules are in place for a reason, and while I may speed, if people can't see, they don't belong on the road. This is the same reason why people over the age of 65 or so need more stringent rules on driving IMO.

I agree. Here in America you take a simple 20 minute written test and a simple 20 minute road test and you can get a license. In Europe it is a huge affair and they test your ability to drive under stressful conditions and in emergency situations. It is way more difficult to get a license there and for good reason. Driving is one of the easiest ways to get killed/maimed. I say we make all the requirements more stringent not just vision.

The correct answer in real life is "it depends what his vision is."
