Are any of you guys in a program or have been in a program where shift hours were changed, e.g. from 12's to 10's or 8's to 12's, etc...
If so, how was this change accomplished? Did the coverage change? Were the total number of hours kept the same? Were less residents allowed to go off service?

here at vandy, for r2s and r3s, we went from 12s to 10s on the peds side and 12s to 8s on the adult side. we did this by increasing our peds coverage (about one extra shift per month per resident) and by letting off service residents rotate through the ED. we also occasionally do an extra shift in the adult ED, though i haven't noticed this. i'm an R2, did 18/month last year, am doing 18/month now.

8s are sweeet.

PM me with further questions, and i'll put you in touch with our chiefs.
