Received an updated (i.e. changed) intern year schedule: I've been told I can alter vacation requests as I please due to this....

1. Surgery
2. Medicine Wards
3. Surgery
4. Acute Pain Service (no weekends, work ~ 7-5, no float)
5. Medicine Wards
6. ICU
2 week Holiday - either can take vacay during this time, if not, then work with anesthesia (OR or L/D for epidurals)
7. Medicine Consult
8. ED - 17 shifts
9. Surgery
10. 2 weeks anesthesia/2 weeks night float
11. ICU
12. Outpt Peds (chill hrs I hear, no wkends, no float)

Vacay rules: not to be used on med/float/ICU months. Can only use 1 vacay week during the 3 months of surgery (total). Overall, have 4 weeks of it, may use 1 week blocks, or 2 week block if on holiday time.

Suggestions? My schedule became even more front-loaded the 1st 6 months then I sort've liked it to be; however, I will likely have one of the more chill 2nd 6 months of intern year, which I am cool with. Thanks for teh tips!

A few questions:

1) Can you take vacation during your medicine consult month?

2) Are you moving for PGY-2? How far away (i.e. 1 hour, or 7 hours, or a whole new time zone)? And if you have to move, is there time built in at the end of your intern year to allow this move?

1. I can

2. Nope, I'm in a categorical program.

A week during block 3 (surgery), 2 weeks around the holidays, and then 1 week in blocks 10 or 12? One week at block 3 surgery, 1 week at the holidays (if this is allowed) or 1 week in block 7, 1 in block 10 and 1 in block 12 (a little break before starting PGY II)?

That way, the vacation blocks are all spaced out some what evenly....

May roll with the 2nd option.

I would like to get as much time in the OR/LD as possible prior to PGY-2/CA-1 year. I imagine the holidays will not net a whole lot of hardcore hours (then again, I may be naive here). I may even just request one for 1st week of med consult instead of the holidays, not sure?

Do you have any big events in the next year (weddings, family vacations, reunions, etc) that you want to/need to attend?

it's more an issue of personal preference. I always liked to push the vacation days as far out into the year as possible, so that you always have it to look forward to. Your first couple of months you won't yet be at the point where you "need" a vacation. Plus since it's a front heavy schedule, you will always be working and so focused on the steep learning curve that by the time you look up it's going to be late fall anyhow. So save those days up til later.

That sounds reasonable, too.

Do you recommend to use during Med Consult, Surg, Peds x 2 weeks?

If I can help it, I don't wish to use it during Acute Pain Service. I hear immediately following my peds rotation, I will again be working in the OR/LD prior to PGY-2 year officially starting.
