I think the important thing is to know your own limitations.
While I was an undergrad at Columbia, at the start of freshman year the academic advisor told me to take Calculus, Gen Chem and Bio, plus all the freshman core courses for 19 credit hours per semester.
Despite my misgivings I went along with it and it was the most stupid thing I could have ever done. Throughout my freshman year it felt like I'm always skating on the edge of disaster-- The courseload was so heavy I was amazed that when the smoke cleared I still had a 3.0 average for that year.
Luckily I only had Physics and O-Chem in my sophomore year and that pretty much completed my Pre-dental requirements. From then on I decided never to take more than 17 credits per semester and make up for it in summer session.
If I had to do it all over again, I would have insisted on taking only Gen Chem and Bio for my freshman year and make up the calculus class in summer session. If I had done that I think my GPA would have been 3.5 for that freshman year.
To quote a famous ancient military philosopher, know thy enemy and know thyself. Do it only if you are truly confident of your own capabilities and you know what you are getting into.
