Schedule?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Many residencies do not allow vacation at the end/start of the residency year. For one, it is a time of turn-over, Chiefs are leaving, interns coming in and to be a man-down causes all sorts of chaos.

It is certainly worth asking about if you have a legit reason like getting married. You will never know if its institutional policy to not allow vacation then, only during certain rotations or whether they just set the schedule without bothering to ask unless you call and ask.

As I understand it. the policy is vacation is only allowed during certain rotations. (I think this has to do with needing to do so many weeks in the ICU, for example, to fulfill the RRC requirements. It may also have to do with what rotations function better short a resident like clinic vs ICU.) I wouldnt be surprised if you couldnt take vacation around turn-over. But I dont think they would exclude all of May and June especially since my vacations can only fall in four of 12 blocks.

So I take it you are on rotations during May and June which do not allow vacation.

I don't think it unreasonable, ONCE YOU GET THERE, to inquire about changing the schedule because of your wedding plans.
