Through some truly top-notch procrastinating on my part, I've managed to reach mid-December without a January elective scheduled. We do all our own 4th year scheduling at my school, so this is all on me. Anyone know of anywhere (preferably in the NE) where I might have a shot at setting up an elective on very short notice? I need to be doing *something* for this upcoming month.

Are you talking about an away rotation, or one through your school? 😕

Away, I suppose. We have to do 20 weeks at affiliated hospitals, but I've completed those. Hence my stating a preference for the North East. (Closer to home. Med school is in California.)
I'm pretty flexible otherwise. It's a free elective.

Maine Med may have electives open. The website is www.mmc.org. They will usually get back to you pretty soon after. The application is on the website, and they provide free housing. I did my whole 3rd and a lot of 4th year there, and the rotations are excellent.

Our of curiosity, why did you do your MS-III year there? Better rotations than at Vermont? Family in Maine?

Same question for your MS-IV year.

A bunch of reasons...fewer medical students than at Fletcher Allen (most times I was the only student on the team), better hospital (IMHO), free housing, most of my friends went to Maine as well, fiance lives in Boston (1.5 hrs away compared to 3.5 hrs from Burlington).

I did 4th year rotations there for mainly the same reasons, also was already familiar with the hospital, and sub-I's are set up much better than at Fletcher Allen - you are first call overnight for the whole team, which I think will be an invaluable experience to have had when I start residency.

I had heard from others who did rotations at both places that people (particularly nurses and ancillary staff) are nicer at MMC. Since I didn't do any rotations at Fletcher Allen, I can't really say if that's true or not, but I had a great experience with the people in Maine as well.
