I would like to know how many of you have had success scheduling more than one interview on a single trip? Are there very many dental schools that are okay with applicants calling to arrange interviews around an already scheduled interview in the area?
I have an interview next month at LECOM, but during the same week UNC has their first scheduled interview date and I'm hoping to just drive up from FL rather than have to fly back out at another time. I have family in NC and I would love a reason to make a week long trip out of my interviews. So I called UNC about this and they don't see to be open to that idea at all. What about other schools - will they be more accepting of that?

to me, there are two sides to this.

the practical one: how can they not be ok with it? They know you have to pay for flights/hotels so it shouldn't be crazy that you would want to get in both interviews with one plane ticket.

the other side: Wait, there is no other side. Buying two separate flights is ridiculous. I do see, however, how dental schools could think that you're not entirely passionate about their school if you tell them you want to schedule around another interview. If I were you, I would just make sure that the interviews are not scheduled on the same day...maybe stay there for a few days and schedule them 2 days apart so you are able to fully devote yourself to each of the schools. good luck!

I don't think they would be as accepting either. They give you an interview date or dates to choose from. It's kind of a slap in the face if you call and ask if you can schedule your own interview time. Unless you can schedule your own interviews like Midwestern or they give you a couple dates to choose from, I would think you're pretty stuck with the day they give you.

So you got an interview at UNC?

Not yet. I was just calling to let see if they were at all considering me for an interview and if I could arrange a specific date around my other interview. To my knowledge UNC hasn't offered any interviews yet, but they do list on their website the scheduled interview dates for the this cycle. I was being extremely hopeful, but I wasn't able to get any information from them.

If you haven't been invited for an interview, it is very pretentious to invite yourself to one. This is a guaranteed way NOT to get an invite.

I wasn't inviting myself. I simply said that if they happened to be considering me at all would it be possible to request a date based on other travel arrangements. In nothing that I have written on here did I say that I invited myself so it's a bit pretentious of you to assume that I did invite myself. A bit more attention to detail would be helpful on your part.

It's pretty darn close! "I'm going to be in the area interviewing at another dental school so if you have any intention of interviewing me, is there a date available at the same time to accommodate my travels?"

If they haven't given you an invite, you shouldn't call asking about a hypothetical one. The supply and demand is in their favor here, not yours.

If you gathered that from what I wrote then you misread my post. I called and asked in general for an applicant who is being considered for an interview would they be able to schedule an interview from the published interview dates or does the school assign a specific date. Yes, I presented it for myself and from the perspective that I would be in the area around a certain interview date, but I also specifically said that I would not presume that I was even being considered for an interview. I don't understand how it is in any way arrogant, pretentious, or assuming to ask a university's policy on extending interviews and to put it into personal context. I was not asking them to change policy for me or anything of that nature.

My original question still stands - How accommodating are other dental schools to prearranged travels when they extend invitations for interviews?

They're not stupid. You can word it as eloquently and politely as you want. They know what you're getting it. It's just tacky and a good way to annoy someone. I know you don't see it this way and will continue to tell us all how we are not reading your original post carefully. Tacky people never know when they're being tacky.

The real answer is they are not accommodating to this. They have to be strict or it becomes chaos when all of us want to save a buck or make long weekends out of every interview. Be lucky they are even considering you. Don't push your luck for anything more. Again....there is supply and demand. Don't give them a reason to toss you out of the pile.

This kind of thing has come up before on the forum. And the responses were the same.

I can tell this is spoken from experience. And I love how you somehow understand everything that Adcoms and dental school secretaries think/know. So which dental school employs you?

It has nothing to do knowing what Adcoms are thinking - it has to do with knowing what the general population is thinking. Tackiness is tackiness.

I would roll with the punches and take their available dates only. I would not push the issue to schedule your own interview. That is just me though. I applied to 16 schools, I see the possible dilemma, but....this is how things go!

Dude. You're putting the cart before the horse. Call about your sweet long-weekend roadtrip plans once you have an interview. I don't need to be employed by a dental school to have logical social graces.

Wow... I guess I'm off a little bit here, because I see nothing wrong with calling and asking how flexible a school is on their interview dates. I would simply ask: "How many dates are available for students who are invited to interview?" and "Are these dates assigned, or are they chosen by the student?" I would finish by saying: "Thanks!"

Seems like a simple enough question to me.

I set up my current interviews with a day in between so that I could make it to both schools all on one plane ticket.

I wish I had the testicular fortitude to demand interviews at my convenience. It has to work around the next Macy's women's suit sale AND my period (I get SO bloated and SO *****y) so I can look like a hot professional, save $, and be THE BESTESTEST.

I need to apologize. There are a number of responses since my last post that I haven't read but I'm sure I know what they all say in general. While I may not find it rude or tacky to ask a school their policy on extending and scheduling interviews my responses to each of you were very rude and tacky. I am sorry. I have no excuses for being so short and abrupt with you. I thank you all for your input and I leave this discussion having found a weakness that I can spend the next few months working to correct. I wish you all the best of luck in your pursuit of dentistry.
