My fiance and I are currently planning an island wedding; however, next year will be my 1st year at med school. We looked at the resorts and because of huricane seasons we would have to do it in January, Feb, etc. The problem is the only week long vacation in those months I'll have will be Christmas week and it is too expensive (we are planning on paying for our guests' stay ourselves). The cheapest rate and the best weather is in the 2nd week of December and I won't have any exams then (I checked the block schedules); however, I will have to miss 2 anatomy lectures and labs. I don't want to sound like a geek about missing 2 school days, but I don't know how strict they are about missing anatomy. So those of you who are in med school please let me know if its duable? Oh and also in the block schedules it looks like I'll have the anatomy finals the following week after I get back. Will I be able to handle it given that I miss 2 labs before? Btw, my school is not pass/fail. Should we go ahead and book for december or pay a lot more and wait till I have a vacation? We are not planning to do it for the whole week since its too expensive, just from Wed till Sunday so I would miss 3 days of school.
Thanks a lot for your help

Missing a couple of anatomy lectures is not a big deal, but you don't want to be taking finals right after you get back from getting married. You want your honeymoon to be a time when you're happy & relaxed, not stressed about upcoming exams.

Why not get married either right before or right after the school year? Hurricane season is very rarely an issue (I assume you're talking about the Caribbean?), and the rates will be MUCH better.

I agree. Planning a wedding is so stressful, first year med school more stressful. Definitely think of doing it after your first year. That way you can enjoy it afterwards as well. You could actually take a honeymoon without worry then. Don't cram it in and miss classes, return to exam. You'll ruin the best day. Be patient and wait for summer.

i dont know about you, but stress messes with my mind, both the upper mind, and the lower mind

and i'd hate it if the stress killed my lower mind during my honeymoon

yes, i'm serious; yes, it's a possibility. why risk it?

I'm a first year that's getting married two weeks after I'm done with the school year. I'd recommend getting married at the end of the year - you'll have nothing hanging over your head and you can focus on the wedding. As for worrying about hurricane season - don't worry about it. Sure, a category 5 could roll through whatever island you go to, but I say roll the dice. I'll be honeymooning in the Caribbean this summer and think a hurricane would be really entertaining, but that's just me.

I echo the other posters and say just wait until 1st year is over or consider spring break if you don't want to wait that long. if you're deadset on december, just call up your school and talk to the dean of students to see if it's feasible. I would NOT have your wedding in early december right before final exams. your wedding and honeymoon should be a wonderful, carefree time, not a time when exams are always on your mind.

2-3 weeks before an exam is a bad bad idea. You'll be stressed about not studying or studying thru your honeymoon. If you can arrange it to happen right after an exam maybe, but you'd be far better off to do it during spring/summer break. Its not like UG when you only really study hard for a few days, you will be in the same study mode as you were for a few days before the MCAT for a few weeks before a medschool exam. You only get married once (well to that person at least), make sure you get to completely enjoy the experience.

thank you so much for all of your responses.
we were thinking of taking the honeymoon in end of may /june since my fiance works on wall street and there is no way he could take off consecutive time for wedding and honeymoon. that's why we thought about doing the 5 day/4 night wedding in december (with 2 of those days being the weekend)--this way we get to enjoy 2 vacations and I would only miss 3 days of school only 2 of which would have anatomy lecture and lab. Winter break and spring breaks are so damn expensive! For example, at the resort that we want december wedding would cost us $300 pernight per couple, while winter, spring vacation wedding would cost us $700 per night per couple and since we're paying for our guests it will add up.
We'll figure something out....
