My schedule for this Fall will technically allow me to volunteer 6 hours a week at a cancer institute. However, I'll be taking a rather difficult course load and will require a lot of time to study.

If I plan on committing 2 years to this place will doing 3 hrs a week as opposed to 6 hrs be such a big difference? Obviously I will only have half the hours but would 3hrs a week look decent-to-impressive to adcoms?

Make an appointment to discuss this situation with the volunteer coordinator. I would imagine you could start the Fall semester at 3 hours of volunteer time, and if you find that you can devote 6 hours, and that's what you want to do, then you could. Hope this helps.

Simpler question: Is 3hrs a week legit or not?

3 hours per week is plenty, especially over two years.

3 hrs/wk is fine. It will add to about 156 hrs/yr if you go year-round. If only during school, it'll be closer to 80 hrs/yr. If you do it for 2-3 yrs before applying, you'll be excellent shape!

Yes, definitely. If you do it for long enough, it will look much better than applicants who just do it for a summer.

It's about the longevity of your extracurricular activites that matter. Your dedication to service(s).
