Hello,
I am currently applying for an IM residency and have recently gotten engaged and want to get married in Summer of 2007. I guess I need to wait until match day to set a date? How soon after match day can I contact the program to find out if I can get vacation around the time I want to get married. I am living now where I am planning to get married however I intend to leave the state for residency and want to get as much of the planning done now as possible. Just wandering if anyone has advice on how hard it it going to be to get my vacation at the time I want.

Thanks

It shouldn't be too hard to do, just be careful not to overdraw on your vacation allowance, because depending on the length of your residency you may need to save some to schedule your divorce during residency.

What?! I keeeeed! :meanie:

I would say, go ahead and start planning now. Since it's more than a year away, you'll be able to give your program plenty of notice. You should be able to get enough vacation time as long as you tell your PD early.

And BTW, CONGRATS!! 😉

2007 is a long time from now -- by then I assume you'll have already completed (or almost completed) your PGY-1 year. I think this is plenty of time for you to plan ahead for your wedding and arrange your requirements and electives around it. Pick a date now or whenever you want to.

We're planning our wedding for spring 2007. My fiance's schedule is the rate-limiting factor, because she still has overnight calls in her PGY2 year.

Give the program you matched at a call the day after match to get their vacation policy. Apparently, you need lots of time in advance to book a place for your reception.

To be honest, we're both looking fondly at the idea of eloping

June is a bad month for residents to be out because graduating seniors find ways to get off campus early and prelims need a couple of weeks to move and get oriented at their new programs. July is worse for PG2s to be out, because the new PG1s need guidance (LOTS of guidance). As said above, talk to your PD soon after you match.
