Hello, first post here. I am taking a research year between third and fourth year to attain some publications as I hope to go into a competitive surgical speciality. My question is that my advisor recommended that I take step 2 during my fourth year after I apply, as she said my step 1 was good enough (STEP 1: 248), should I listen to her? Is she right? Or should I take STEP 2 during this summer? I just do not think that if I do that well on STEP 2 (>250) it will help me much, but if I do worse it will significantly reduce my chances. More about me is that I am not AOA, but did honor 4 rotations (surgery, psych, neuro, IM), I go to a mid tier level allopathic school in the south, and I have a lot of leadership positions. Help a girl out, because I am lost! Thank you

Probably depends heavily on the field you are applying, do they expect Step 2 to be on your application?

If you did well on step 1 and are honoring a bunch of rotations, you’ll probably do well on step 2.
