I am extremely blessed to have received a full CoA scholarship to UTSW and a full tuition scholarship to WashU. Today, I got into my dream school, Penn. I know they are generous with scholarships, but how about matching? I am not URM if that is important to know. Also, If they are likely to match, when should I email the financial aid office? Thank you!

Go to our financial aid forums.

I would weigh your options carefully. Reduce the amount of loan money you need to rely on given the interest rates and threats to federal student loans or repayment plans.

Thanks for the help. When would you recommend sending the negotiation email that was highlighted in the video?

Do you have all your numbers? Calculated what your ask is for Penn?

With the current situation with university funding, I don't know how Penn would respond. We saw yesterday that Columbia got shafted with a withhold-payment to federal grants to programs university-wide. I would do your calculations, but reach out to Penn Med office of financial aid before commitment deadlines.

I have calculated my lower threshold of attending Penn over UTSW and WashU. My question is, Penn's financial aid does not come out until late March/early April. Would emailing about potential negotiations before I receive my package be a bad look? The benefit would be that the money is not yet given to other acceptees, so it is still available for dispersal. That said, I am not sure if that is taboo, as it may look like I am jumping the gun. Any insight is appreciated.

But you already have numbers and financial aid packages for your two other schools, right?

At this point, admissions will be entering the countdown phase until orientation. We want to have as many commits and enrollment deposits to lock the class down in preparation for the pomp of orientation.

You want to know when Penn needs the information to make its best offer to you. They don't want to engage in negotiation; there's not enough time. They'll do it if they have to... like if you were able to get a better counteroffer, but this isn't the real estate market. No one wants to haggle over a few thousand if they can help it and in this volatile financial environment.

Send them a nice email requesting a virtual call about if Penn Financial Aid would like information about scholarship/financial aid packages you have already received from schools whose offers you are also entertaining (don't drop names). You would like to decide where to commit-to-enroll as soon as possible to start planning your move. All you need is to know WHEN they want this information before giving it to them, and do it in a way that considers their own urgency and timeline.

Remember, this week is the countdown to Match Day. We may be distracted for the next week or so. Then again, financial aid should be doing exit interviews with graduates about their debt management while also answering questions about financial aid from all incoming students.
