What are some reliable websites to look for scholarships? I'm going to be honest here and say I have not extensively researched scholarships outside of my university so I am lost on how to find them, where to look and which websites are legit.

TAMU sends their own scholarship application out separate from everything else, possibly other programs do the same?

I'm most likely doing the dual MPH/DVM degree at CSU. The MPH program through the school of public health has some funding opportunities but not many. I'm not sure how people find private scholarship opportunities. I know of one off the top of my head from my church but that's it..

There are not many “scholarship” opportunities for first years. Most schools offer scholarships for 2-4 years. Private scholarships would be the best way to go but those are throwing a dart at an apple in the dark. Of what I’ve heard, it’s very hard to get any scholarships for doctoral programs from anywhere 🙁 but Ive been encouraged by other vet students to just apply to anything and everything to see if anything sticks

My school also maintained a list of scholarships. They didn’t offer incoming student scholarships though, you applied in the spring so earliest you could get one would be for second year.

I think AVMF has a fairly wide variety of scholarships but they’re usually in very niche areas. Same goes for a lot of the organizations like AABP, AASRP, AAEP, etc. They may have them but they’re very targeted awards. Honestly, it seems like a very top 1-5% of the class got the vast majority of the scholarships and most of us got nothing or maybe like $500 a year. And even the big ones my school awarded to top students often weren’t awarded until the end of clinics or right before clinics/end of didactic. There just aren’t as many offered for grad students. It’s definitely worth the effort to apply for ones you qualify for, but my experience is that there’s very few that most people are eligible for. Like so many of the ones my school offered were like for a person interested in canine reproduction, or llama medicine, or someone from xyz county, etc.

So, use discretion and trust your gut if something feels off, BUT, I utilized something called familydoctor.org. They have a navigator tool that can find local assistance programs, which includes scholarships and other educational expense help. I plugged in CSUs zip code (congrats on the dual degree acceptance!!!!!) and it gave me 124 results, 56 of which are assistance with cost. It will cover a wide range of things and you may not be eligible for anything, but it's worth a look!

They also provide resources for food, housing, transit, furniture, work, legal, financial, and medical assistance if you ever need it!

Do you mind linking the page for assistance programs? I can’t find it on their website :/

Most/all schools maintain their own internal scholarships from donors, depending on the school there will be quite a few, but....

this. Unless you are interested in some random niche/VIP niche and extremely high performing (academically) or even sometimes from a certain county/area, you're all but guaranteed to get nothing. A very small handful of students in my class got full rides via internal scholarships (whether it was one large award every year, or a combo of multiple smaller awards), at least one allegedly made a profit during vet school (big drama when people found out about this). Many perfectly deserving students with great grades will get nothing.

Applications at U of I were fairly labor-intensive, too, so for me I actually stopped applying after second year knowing my chances were so slim. Not sure how other schools do it.

+1 to the niche statement. The scholarships I got were because they were such specific things, I was the only person in my class who could even apply to it. The most I ever got was 5k.

Consider finding random scholarships outside the school. There are hundreds of random scholarships online. The only caveat is whether or not they apply to post-grad folks and if it's shady

Also, this likely does not apply to OP specifically since I know they’ve taken many courses, but my school did a 3+1 program where your first year of vet school fulfilled requirements for your senior year of an animal science degree. So I did three years in UG, started vet school, then graduated with my BS after first year of vet school. I had won many undergrad scholarships, including a 4-year tuition waver from the state regents bc of my ACT score. But since my “senior year” of undergrad was my first year of vet school, the univerisity agreed that tuition waver could cover a portion of my vet school tuition first year. (Grad classes cost more than undergrad, but they’d pay undergrad rates and it covered maybe 60-70% of my first yr vet tuition). I also got some scholarships for senior animal science students because while I was a vet student, I was technically also an ansi senior simultaneously. And some of the others I’d won I asked to be paid out that “senior” year and they all did. It was a very unique situation, but I think more than one school offers a 3+1 type of degree, so I bring it up as an option for students who may be in that situation. I only had to pay less than $5,000 in tuition for my first year of vet school because of undergrad scholarships. I paid that in cash and didn’t take out loans until second year started (thanks to my parents paying my living expenses as their contribution).

Other resource: CollegeBoard, our arch nemesis. They have a scholarship search function and veterinary medicine is a category!
