So with all these acceptances I've been seeing a lot of people saying, "I decided to go to --- because I got a scholarship". I was just wondering If any of you that have gotten these scholarships would mind sharing what your stats were as well as other factors that helped you get them and how much they were and to which school.

I think just about every school has merit scholarships, but they don't give many. Some schools have more money to give than others, too, depending on state funding and how many rich donors they have!

Also, some schools (including the ones at which I received scholarships) request that you not discuss the details of your scholarship with others... which I pretty much understand. 🙂

If your application is strong, the opportunities are there.

I had over 500 hours of work experience, over 500 hours of volunteering, and around 100 hours of shadowing.

Wonder how many NYU gives out. Jeremy Lin's brother either is a D4 or just graduated, and Mark Zuckerberg's father (of Facebook Fame) , is a NYU Dental alumn

Whew, only takes a 26 AA and a 4.0, thought it was going to require something ridiculous. Thanks Glimmer, you give us hope 😉

LOL! You asked!! 😀

I know nobody else seems to be biting on this thread, but I'm not gonna lie--of the people I know who got scholarships, their applications were pretty dang awesome in multiple ways.

During one of my acceptance calls, the faculty member asked about other schools I was considering and what would be the deciding factors. I told him mainly $$$$$$$$ and that School Z was cheaper. He then gave me a half-tuition scholarship. Moral of the story: Don't be afraid to let your schools know where you stand. They just might surprise you.

Currently a full-time assistant for an oral surgeon (8 months), 200+ hours as a private DAT tutor, ~1,200 hours of research (2 publications), Co-founder/VP of a college organization (2 yrs), mentored underprivileged Hispanic children (3 yrs).
I was also well-known for routinely stomping any opponent that dared to face me on the intramural tennis courts. :cigar:

Fantastic tidbit from Mumford--if you're a desirable applicant, you can bargain. You just want to go about doing it in a very respectful way.

I got a fantastic scholarship offer from Michigan that I unfortunately had to turn down and another very generous offer from UCLA. Nothing from the other schools that I was accepted to (USC, Penn and UCSF). I had a 4.01/4.07 sGPA/oGPA and 21/22/17 AA/TS/PAT. I had about 100 hrs shadowing, and about 1000 hrs combined of work, research, volunteering and leadership experience. I went into the cycle expecting nothing and I was actually under the impression that merit-scholarships were nearly impossible to come by. Do the best you possibly can and hopefully some schools will reward you at the end.

I was offered 3 scholarships out of 4 acceptances, one of which I was able to double with a bit of bargaining. Top candidates hold a great deal of power, despite what naysayers may say (they are wrong and the proof is in the pudding). I too thought scholarships were out of the question, but this cycle we have had a large number of recipients here on SDN. As one might expect, they are handed out to the best of the best...so, be that.

I think it varies greatly depending on the school. I received a scholarship from Iowa to help offset the cost of out of state tuition. Another school I interviewed at mentioned to my interview group that they will not give out scholarships. I had 3.95/4.0 oGPA/sGPA 24/26/22 AA/TS/PAT. Around 1200 hours research and 150 hours shadowing/assisting.

I was awarded scholarships from 3 of the 4 schools I was accepted to (totaling 100k). Overall a well rounded applicant but by no means spectacular. I was blessed to have successful interviews and great interviewers who claimed to have really pooled for me. It is possible to get acceptances and scholarship offers without having beautiful numbers on your app, just try to make up for any weaknesses by strengthening other areas of your application.

I was offered scholarships at 5 of the 6 schools that I was accepted to. I have over 2,200 hours of community service, I worked various jobs in the healthcare profession and childcare facilities for over five years while going to college. I did the AmeriCorps program, CityYear. 3.8 GPA in Health Sciences, 22PAT, 21TS, 25 reading, 19 quantitative reasoning. I am also a member of a Native American tribe. My advice, don't just do something in order to get accepted into dental school or to get a scholarship, get involved in activities that you are really interested in and love doing.

Offered the Dean's Scholarship (120k) at UPenn. 4.0/26AA, nearly 4 years of research, 2000+ non-clinical volunteer hours, and some major university awards. Based on my chat with their admissions officers, they seemed very interested in my reasons for genuinely doing the activities I did (rather than being a box-checker) and I think that's why I received the scholarship.

2nd what this guy says. I got 3 scholarship offers from schools I was accepted to and my numbers weren't spectacular either. I do have a couple of publications from research though. I guess I was just good enough on each section overall.

I have average DAT and GPA but received a $80,000 scholarship to BU. It's possible! I'm also still trying to navigate and learn more about the merit scholarships.

Tons of leadership, 2 research w/ 1 publication, worked, I think my interview went very well/was complimented on being very articulate and great communications skills, about 112 shadowing hours...

Hi, I know I am several years late but your stats caught my eye. I have a 19 AA too but my science were low and I thought I wouldn't have any chance at scholarships at all. If you don't mind me asking, are you a minority?

Poster hasn't been seen for about 7 years. Based on their past post history, it seems as though they were from a disadvantaged background:
