Does anyone know what the housing deal is after the lottery? I submitted the online app. before the lottery deadline. Something about contracts being sent out. I keep trying to contact them to get more info but all I get is the answering machine. Does anyone has an insight on this? Thx.
 
According to the confirmation email from the housing application, the deadline to be in the lottery was March 23rd, with the drawings from that being over the next week and contracts being mailed out on April 2nd (today). Considering all that, and mail being slow, we probably won't find out until the end of the week. 🙁

Also, someone mentioned in the Scholl class 2011 thread that the computers had some sort of problem, so that may delay this process further.
 
I called Scholl AGAIN today and apparently there are STILL problems with their computer system. I asked the girl how long it might be a problem, and she wasn't sure 🙁 Basically, she said they were doing what they could to keep things on track time-wise, but if some us won't get housing, I'm sure we'd like to know so we can find a new place to live!! 😡 lol
 
My roommate just found out that he got into 'the dorms' today via email, so I assume any computer problems they had are resolved and you guys should expect your notice in the next week.

Just fyi.
 
Thanks for the info! Do you think if we haven't heard by now the prospect for getting in isn't good? AND anyone else looking to get into the dorms, can you post when you find out? Thanks! 🙂
 
I got the lottery outcome email on friday as well. If you don't get an email by monday I suggest you just call them. Some ppl might have changed their mind and might not want to live in the dorms; in that case, they will have openings. I hope this helps 🙂
 
I went to the Woodland's (apartments right next to campus on opposite side of the dorms) leasing office to pay rent a couple days ago and they told me for next year they are actually reducing rent! Some where in the neighbor hood of 850/month for a single (I didn't ask the 2 bedroom price) So if any of you can't get in the dorms, this may be a viable alternative. Just throwing that out for anyone interested.

Oh and here is a shameless plug, can you pm me if you decide to live in the woodlands. I get a referral bonus if do. If don't want me to get the bonus, then we still cool. No pressure. 😎

Are you doing a one person or two person apt? Just curious to see if maybe they're doing the lottery in some kind of order. Thanks again! 🙂

I did one bd; however, it doesn't matter what style housing you choose. I confirmed it with them. They just pool all the lottery entries and randomly select it. I asked if they did it seperately for one bd or two bd (shared or random) but they said it's all pooled together and picked out randomly. So lottery just guarrantees that you get housing but doesn't really mean you get your first preference.

So now I am waiting to get my actual contract to see if they did provide me my first preference. Lot of ppl choose to opt out of contract if they don't get their preference incase if you still wanted to live in the dorms.

I turned my application a couple days past the deadline (for a 2-bedroom) and I got notified on Friday that I received a spot from the lottery..I was really surprised so if you got your app in time, I'm sure you'll get a spot.
 
Thanks guys 🙂 My roommate for the Fall informed me that she got an email, so I'm assuming I'm in the clear.
 
Ok, the email told you that you have been selected for the lottery and will be sent a contract that states that you will receive housing (probably 2nd contract period). Neither will say whether you will be in a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment. Actual housing arrangements will not be made until 2-3 before the contract period starts, which i take to mean we will not know until mid-July (boo!).

Also, I heard that it's pretty normal to still be on the waiting list if not picked in the initial lottery and still receive housing. Mandy told me that someone last year who had their housing option fall down the drain was still able to get into student housing.
 
Hey guys, has anyone received their housing contract in the mail from RFU Housing department yet? I havent and I was just wondering if its coming anytime soon or if we need to wait a while. Thanks.
 
Not Yet...but I believe it should come next week since they said week or two after the lottery outcome.
 
I got my contract today 4/19. The contract says that it is due by 4/23 with a $ 500 deposit. This is rather fast. The letter accompanying the contract says that it is due by 4/30. I am confused. Anyone else have the same dilemma??

Also, I just realized that the room is completely UNFURNISHED!! Not even a bed.
 
They probably had all the contracts printed out, but with the computer problems and getting them mailed out late, I think they provided a little more time to get them back to them. Heck, I still haven't even received mine yet!

Well, i expected them to be unfurnished, but how unfurnished? I should have appliances, right? (i.e. fridge, oven/stove).

I'm pretty sure there's going to be a fridge, oven, stove (maybe microwave) but I think its all the furniture that isn't going to be provided like beds, desks, tables, chairs, etc., etc. I havent received my packet yet either, maybe today though. Wonder why the deadline is so soon! I might need to pay another $14 for priority overnight shipping like I did for my acceptance deposit. 🙁
 
Alright guys, so with student housing, the only thing that is provided is the fridge,stove, and microwave. So you guys will need to buy the rest such as mattress, desk, lamp for the bedroom and living room, couch, tv, silverwares, etc. Everything depends on how much you want to spend. You guys could get these items at nearby stores like Walmart, Target, etc. or drive like an hour to ikea. So students will be selling their stuffs because they are moving to downtown for 3rd years, so if you guys dont mind some used stuffs, this is an option as well.

Dude that sucks. I wonder why the school doesn't offer furnished on campus apartments. 🙁 On top of the stress of moving out there, I wont even have a bed to sleep on or a chair to sit on until I buy the stuff same day! On top of that I might not even have a car at the time. Even if I ship my small SUV out it wont be large enough to tote a bed frame/matress and everything else I'm going to need! Aaahhh I'm starting to freak out a bit! Sorry guys. ..

Ahh stress...keeps you on your feet!!!
 
Alright so I called the housing department today. Talked with Jennifer Schmidt and she said that the actual due date for sending the contract is April 30th. The contract might say a date on it but it has been postponed to April 30th since the contracts were send out late.

I am frustrated about unfurnished room as well! Well there are kitchen accessories but not having the basics (bed,chair or table) is not good. A school dorm! should have these.
 
Well, I just received my contract. Items provided exceeds my current apartment now. It'll be nice to have a dishwasher for a change 😀

But moving from Seattle, I agree with Justincredible, it's a lot to have to ship/bring to Chicago from such a long distance. Has anyone else looked into moving/shipping options? I'd be very interested to know some cheap ways to get all my crap there (and hopefully not have to spend a week U-Haul'ing it either).
 
you guys are so lucky, at least from my point of view. i have to worry about an entire house to move, including my two furry children (dogs 😀 ) and my two non-furry children (humans 🙂 ). talk about EXPENSIVE! I will try not to panic but it is getting difficult.
 
Ahh! I totally feel the frustration. It totally sucks not having some of those essential items. I'm planning on getting things delivered at the time I'll be arriving - so hopefully that will work.
 
It does sucks not to have all those stuffs provided to you guys, but don't worry too much. I remember that when school started for me this past August, I was in the same boat as you guys. Coming from California and not having a car here was not cool. But you guys will be moving in during orientation week and that will be the perfect time for you guys to get your items. Orientation week is pretty chill, so you guys will have the afternoon to go explored the places around here. And if you guys like, you could order your stuffs at ikea and get it shipped to student housing so even if you dont have a car here, you could still furnish your place with stuffs that you will be using for 4 years.
 
Did/Does anyone live in the student housing apartments for family. I doubt we will get in because the lady told me that the wait list is very long. Infact I havent even submitted an application at all. But I was wondering if anyone likes it? I was turned off by the pictures on the web which made it look like a dorm room, ahhh. I would much rather have a more homey feeling apartment because I do have a family. Also does Chicago have any subsidized or low income housing options. I know here in San Diego you can get a discount on some normal apartment complexes if you make less than a certain amount. Thanks
 
On-campus housing is not bad at all... here are the pros and cons:

Pros:
-Waking up 15 mins before class is okay
-Facilities are clean (buildings are only 4 years old)
-The apartments are pretty large (i have never heard anyone complain about how small the apts are)
-Key card access for security with cameras in the lobby
-"High-speed" internet

Cons:
-More expensive than surrounding apts
-Parking sucks... esp. if you live in building 301 and the weather is not cooperating
-Only DirecTV hookup is allowed (more costly than cable around here)
-Need to provide all furniture, cookware, etc...
-If you want to have company over, you have to go down to the front door and let them in... there is no intercom system to let someone in.
-"High-speed" internet is HORRIBLE and can be considered "dial-up" at most times during the weekdays, and the school's firewall prevents you from downloading content off websites (no... i don't mean that... but i couldn't draft my fantasy football team on Yahoo b/c of the school's firewall. That's ridiculous). The school's IT department is worthless and they should all be terminated.

Off-topic, the campus internet is a joke as well... incredibly long and stupid passcodes to get you on an internet that doesn't work in most classrooms. So much for a "wireless campus" as been promised over the last two years.

To sum it up, you pay an extra $100/month or so for the convenience of not having to drive to school... worth it in my mind... but I can't wait to get out of forsaken North Chicago once my external rotations start.

I believe we get our room assignments couple of weeks before school starts/orientation.

Is IKEA really about an hour away from campus? Bummer, I was planning on ordering online and having everything delivered, but I didnt know it was that far. I wonder if they'd still deliver?
 
I recieved my housing assigment TODAY via E-mail!!

Also, found out that we are responsible for Electricity bill!! It's not included in the housing packet!!! We set it up on our moving day with Comed. i.e. make monthly payments not part of student housing cost. Not good....The reason I choose student housing was to NOT having to worry about paying seperate bills.

Not a good start....no desk, no chair, no bed, and NO electricity. hmm...wat else?

DirectTV is also separate, as with food and anything else. I really hope I hear back from the financial aid office sooooon

I also just saw the dates to reserve your move-in day: July 23-July 28. Kind of early for someone like me, I wasn't expecting to move in until the week of Orientation. Looks like I'll be on the phone forever trying to make an arrangement with Student Housing 😛
 
From what I understand, the electric bill is all we're responsible for (unless you get cable) and its only like 20-30 bucks a month. Everything else like phone, heating, waste, A/C is all covered. That's a hell of a lot better than any apartment I've ever lived in! I've always had to pay like water/sewage, heat, etc.

Think of all the money you'll save in gas! I'm excited to walk across the parking lot to school!

As for furniture, I'm bringing like a table and couch and everything else I'm just going to Ikea since its so cheap and you can just throw it away if you don't want to move it.

I'm in building 101! anyone else?

Hey Tiggles, I emailed Mandy this morning and this is directly from her reply..

" FA packets are going out this week -- if you don't have it by middle of next week, let me know! "

So expect it soon I guess. Hope this helps!!!
 
I am in building 101...also i can't move in during the times they have online so i emailed the housing people about it so hopefully it won't be a problem...

it wont be a problem...I had the same ordeal, emailed them with the date I was flying in and it was A-ok 👍...
 
I'm in 201! Anyone else?.....oh one more question:

Can't we just write one type of address or do we have to do the parcel address differently from a regular mail address?

Parcels are to be sent to:

Your Name
(Building #) University Circle, (Apt #)
North Chicago, IL 60064

With the exception of US Mail, all other packages such as UPS or FedEx will need to be picked up from the school's mailroom.
