I'm deciding between GW and Tulane both for MD/MPH. I'm pretty sure I want to do something in policy/government (maybe politics) eventually...I know GW seems a hands down favorite, but there's a lot going on in NOLA post-Katrina and there's also a program at Tulane that lets you do health policy at the state capital in Baton Rouge. I was a politics major and am a bonafide politics junky.
Any tips?
Thanks!

Can't give you any tips per-say, but I can give you my opinion- GW. It is in D.C. which is the political capital of the world, and if you want to pursue a career in policy/gov, where better to go to school and make connections than in D.C.? Like you said, it 'seems a hands down favorite' and it is the one to choose if you are wanting a career in gov. There's so much political activity in D.C. it would be almost impossible not to get pulled into it.👍

GWU all the way..
the school has connections to all the government institutions, they will also
give you scholarships if you say you'll work after your done with school in government.

just to show how this is evident
they told me if i major in forensic science and work 2 years for a government agency.. free tuition for undergrad, books, dorm.
honestly im actually about to double major in psych and forensic science and then do forensic medicine just because of that..

so there are very likely also grad programs for that too..

lol..
well either way D.C
is still our capital
the place with every gov agency being within 30 miles of the city
not to mention the city is easily accessiable by metro..
and the D.C metro is only trumped in beauty by the moscow opera-style metro
=)
but i got a D.C bias lol its 30min from my house

Interesting you'd post this... I'm going to go against the grain and put my vote in for Tulane. As someone interested in the MD/MPH option, Tulane's new program that includes a rotation implementing health policy is pretty unique. Unlike at the DC schools where such opportunities are neither guaranteed nor structured, this is a sure bet. Sure, DC is a politic hub, but I doubt you can get as much hands-on experience there as you can at Tulane. Plus, if DC is where you want to be in the long run, it might be a nice look to get this experience under you belt at Tulane, and then opt for residency programs in DC and make those connections then.

Just my two cents. I really think you can't lose either way - congrats!

GW is on probation, right? I'd go to Tulane. I think it's a better school, and it seems like the ideal place to study public health.
