Hey SDN, I have a massively important issue to discuss with you. Signature lines on your school email.

I've noticed that a lot of my classmates have really extensive signature lines. Many of them list name, graduating year, school, phone number, and then activities (president of X, secretary of Y, member of Z committee, etc etc etc).

I am active in a few things at my school that I suppose I *could* put in my signature line, but I would kinda feel like a tool if I did that.

What says SDN? What do you do?

I think it's pretty ******ed honestly. I feel like some people in my class have those signatures as a form of mental masturbation. I don't really think anyone gives a **** about the random club you're president of. If I'm emailing administration or professors within my institution, I'll sign OMSIII after my name so they have some gist of the mold I fit into if they're not familiar with my name. If I need to email someone outside the institution or something, I'll usually add my school and graduation date. Pretty much all you'll ever need.

It's lame. I just insert a comment to imagine my ridiculous list of activities.

^ Seriously these ridiculous signatures I do see, moreso when I was in college though.

I have only used the "look I am a med student" signature line on summer internship/job inquiries/cover letter stuff. Everything else no...because I am not a douche.

If it is relevant to information you are sending/trying to receive, then put it in there. If you are the president of the surgery club sending an e-mail about upcoming surgery club events, then yes it matters. If you are the treasurer of the neuro club trying to collect neuro club dues, then yes. If you forget to take it off in a run-of-the-mill e-mail, no big deal.

Other than that, remember what your mother said: no one likes a show-off!

Mine says

Tryp
MD candidate Class of 2015
Acme University

Most of my classmates have the same.

haha a buddy of mine has "the artery is supreme" in his signature line lol, but it's a joke...

I only use it when sending professional e-mails. And even so it's the simple:

Postal LastName
OMS-1
SCHOOL NAME

I think it's a bit much to add all that excessiveness to one's e-mail signature. I've seen links to websites of awards/fellowships won on e-mail signatures....NO ONE CARES

i think the oatmeal illustrates it pretty well..

To paraphrase Panda MD

"As the letters become a person's name get longer, their ability to take care of a patient decreases."

I think the same can be said for long sig' lines.

I usually just sign it with "signature enthusiast" if I list more than one thing below my name, so as to acknowledge how silly a list of titles and positions looks. I like being "in" on the joke. Even if its a joke at my expense.

I have my year status, school name and club titles simply because it spares me the issue of including it when I do send it somewhere that matters....it's helpful to have club titles for classmates, especially those in the class opposite of yours, to know what you're linked to when trying to contact people regarding particular questions or concerns. It's helpful to have school year and school name when emailing anyone outside your school or even your own faculty, as amazingly enough, there are times they won't be able to remember off the top of their head if you're a first or second year.

Some of them are over the top, of course. But it serves a purpose and if you're that uncomfortable with it, then don't do it. It's a personal choice and until someone has their CV listed in the signature, I don't really think it's worth concerning yourself with. I hear you first years have bigger things to worry about right now anyway huh? 😉

I customize it for each email.

I.e.
To Professor:
Signed,
First and last name, OMSII

To Friend (usually don't use school email):
Signed,
First name

To Dean:
Signed,
First and last name, OMSII
President of Student Chapter of AOAO

Etc.
One size does not fit all

I think its really stupid. Most people in my class that do that are first year med students doing PBL. They all think they are better than everyone else anyways.

It makes sense to do that....I'm just too freakin lazy lol. It's all about motives.....some students are pretentious, some like myself are just lazy 🙂
